I shot this at a church, just right before a quincinera (Sweet 15). I thought it was a nice storytelling shot, as the mass was about to commence just before the actual event.

Do you have more shots from a different angle?

i like the idea, but, the first think i noticed is that its from the rear of the church, i would like it more if you could get it from the front of the church, thats just my opionion, it might not even have been possible, but

This is a good start - if you're going to shoot from the back, perhaps if your camera was at a slightly higher angle so we can see a bit of the sanctuary. Right now the bottle exactly blocks it covering any view at all. Even with the background OOF, I believe it would be visually more interesting.

Why was the Host also not in focus?

I'll hazard a guess that the camera was set to Av and picked a really slow shutter speed. We're probably seeing slight camera shake.

it was shot using a 17-85mm EF-S IS lens... which I'll never use again. Borrowed it from a friend and was just curious how it performs.

Do you recall your exposure settings? I confess knowing little about the 17-85. I'd love to see more of your shots from that day though. I've never done a quincinera, but I do a lot of the 13 year old equivalents called Bar Mitzvah's ;).

i think that there isnt much shake, if you look at the pitcher it is in focus and you can see the sweat on it, not to go off topic or poke fun, but is that the sweat of god?
however the host further away is out of focus. the aperture was too low, and the focal point was on the front of the pitcher. which is allright, i agree that the whole host should be in focus, however its not necessary, for the photo

one other thing i noticed, is that the cap for the pitcher is off center, it might not be possible to fix that, just something that caught my attn,. the more i look at it.. i still like the photo though

Is it just me or does anyone else not understand how a picture of this decanter in a church relates to a Quinceañera? This picture alone doesn't tell me a story. Maybe it's just me?

If I remember correctly, ISO 800 with exposure of 1/30th of a second @ F4.0 handheld. I'd have to check the exif data, but I that's what it was at.

The decanter of wine is for a mass that occurred during the event - Catholic churches have these sort of things.

And no, I didn't want to mess with the wine top lol, I was tempted but didn't want to get any funny looks. :)

the 17-85 IS lens wasn't all that great - I thought it would be good to use with my crop body, but it really gets soft below 5.6 or so. I'm disappointed, my friend blew about $450.00 on that, and he probably could have gotten something much better for that money.

I understand wine and Catholic mass, but how does it relate to a Quinceañera?

I'm not Catholic and really am not familiar with a quincinera, but I believe that this "rite of passage" tradition is typically integrated with a religious ceremony like a mass.

Many cultural traditions are rooted in religion as the binding glue of that particular group. A similar comparison would be in Judaism where a young man or woman "comes of age" in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony. Although a rite of passage it is also religious and would take place in a synagogue or temple during a service.

it might be my eyes, but it looks slightly front focused to me.
