I just got the Pelican 1620 (it's pretty deep, and also has the carry handle for rolling it about).
http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1620
Anyhow, before I figure out how to arrange my bodies and lenses, I thought it would be useful if anyone using Pelican cases would post a photo or two with their current arrangement.
This will help not only me, but all other Pelican Case owners, in order to find even more effective ways to store equipment.
Thanks for posting.

Do you have the foam or the padded dividers?

Actually, This is the model I got:
http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1620
But with the Foam Inserts.
By looking at my gear link, anyone can get an idea of the job at hand.
How do I go about getting Pads vs Foam inserts? Pros and Cons of each?.
The use I will be giving to the Case, is mostly moving it from the house to the trunk of the car, and then simply assembling the camera rigs on site for whatever assignments.
This is why I wanted to see other POTN user photos, see if they like to store their cameras assembled (w/lens), or if the lenses stand up or lay down (On this 1620 model they look like they'd be good standing up through foam).
Anyhow, any help is always greatly appreciated.

Pro for pads: can change your mind and re-organize it anytime you buy or sell new gear.
Pro for foam: can absorb more shock

So with the Padded Inserts, you actually get a two level storage?? Is this standard for the pads, or do you have to buy two separately?...
Shweet !!...

better check your dealer, this was an option (very expensive option) for this case. It is a deep case and I'm not sure whats available for yours.

From my understanding it depends on how deep your case is and I'm pretty sure that the 1624, if you get the padded version is dual level.

I have a Pelican 1514 that I have way too much stuff in. I have used it for for several shoots and it works good--- I bought the 1514 becasue it is a legal carry on size for airline travel--- the problem with mine is that it is WAY too heavy to make the airline requirements--I would have to carry the Mark and 70-200 like other photogs do.
I am seriously thinking about getting the 1614 (adjustable padding w/wheels)--so I can fit everything I want for a wedding shoot--- a few more lenses and flash units with pw's.

You know that's one of the considerations I want to put on the table. Which pelican case is "legal" size to carry on the plane. I see myself doing this when I travel and I was almost clear on getting the 1624 as my first and final pelican case for my gear (in my signature) with room to grow.
Unfortunately, the 1624 is not legal size. Correct me if I'm wrong and although the 1514 is legal size to carry on, you're right it can get heavy and will over exceed the weight limit. So back to square one.
What are you attempting to do about this?
In addition, between the 1614 and the 1624, aside from larger size, why not just get the 1624 and be done with it? Of course, you'd get the padded version and with wheels.

I am thinking of using the Foam for now, and continue to study the padded dividers idea.
Now another related question: (or two)
- How is it more efficient to store Lenses? For short lengths I am thinking Vertical, but for my 70-200 and 300/4, do I also want to go vertical (would save lots of space) or rather horizontal?
- I like the idea of storing the three bodies with their lenses attached, just to be able to keep in the trunk of the car, and then pull out quickly in case of need. This of course might not be as space efficient. Thoughts?...
- What do you do for Camera Straps? Let them hang over the top of the foam, or cut a small slot for them?
Thanks for all the great comments, advice, and photos so far !!

I had a pelican case with the pick and pluck foam when I was doing video work a few years back- ---it worked but I vowed that I would never get the foam again because it does not give you the ability to change things around.
With saying that--it is easy to push things into the foam that you do not have ot make holes for---such as the straps etc.

Ben,
I didn't go with the 1624 because I didn't think I needed the extra height. The longest lens I have is the 100-400L and I hope it fits standing up. Also I didn't like the two tier padded divider. I want to be able to just reach in and pull out what i need without taking out the upper tier. And if working out of it in the field I would be afraid of taking out the upper putting it on the side and leaving it behind.

That's a good point. let us know whether the 100-400 will fit in there standing up. That is how I want to organize this thing. The extra height is something I want to avoid, although, the two tier organizer can be helpful but also can be a pain, as you have stated.

My 100-400 measures 9" standing up with caps on and hood reversed of course. And Pelican says 10-1/2" interior dims. So we will see when it gets here.

I definitely will get this. Despite the room I may have in the case in itself, the little pockets would do well with batteries, cords, an other crap that are small items that shouldn't take up the possibility of lens spots! Hahaha, muahahaha, muahahahaa *evil laugh*.

I was worried about the lid organizer taking up room and preventing me from being able to stand up my 100-400. BUT ! if I don't put anything in the pocket directly above the 100-400 I should be OK. You talked me into it:lol: I'll order one next week. Nothing like having extra room in the dividers to fill with a new lens now and then:D Same evil laugh as yours.

I am downloading my pics of the 1620, as I continue to look for the Padded dividers. The Foam is ok, but far from sufficient if you are constantly using it.
Also, please let me clarify -for those who may not know- That though the case FITS 70-200 and my 300mm Prime standing up, the case is 60 cubic inches, far from the allowed airline maximum carryon.
So this 1620 for me stays in the trunk of my car, giving me more options when it comes down to shoot action, or even to lug around to a private party. But on trips, I will have to pack one or two bodies and a couple of lenses into the Backpack.
Anyhow, pics coming up.

Here it is. One photo illustrates all the gear in place, and the second shows no foam or padding whatsoever, just to let you see the amount of gear stored there. I hope this helps. (Like I have said before, the problem is that by inserting and removing the devices, the little foam squares get looser and looser, making it simple to see how in a month of daily use the foam will be in bad shape.

That just makes me cringe...
This photo merits some explanation.
When the Case arrived and I wanted to work on the foam, I carefully placed the cameras and lenses in the case, with the utmost attention to detail and ensuring that nothing or nobody would even breathe on the case. As soon as I was done, I removed all gear to a padded table, and then replaced everything into the foam.
Just thought it was a good way to show the amount of stuff it holds.
Cheers,

Comments? It looks like that foam system would be great for protecting your equipment during travel, or rough handling circumstances.
But if one is looking for a method to simply store their gear for stationary access/protection, then the padded dividers seem more sensible - also makes for less wasted interior space and enables faster identification of the pieces.

The big brown truck just dropped off my 1654 that I ordered from B & H Sunday night. The first thing I checked was the fit of my 100-400L standing up. IT FITS! The lens with caps on and hood reversed is about 1/4" higher then top of the case with the lid of the case open, and the inside of the lid is about 1-3/4" deep. That makes it plenty big enough for the 100-400L. Pictures will follow this weekend when I have some time to get it organized.

Here's my 1560 loaded up. I have a Sigma 150 macro coming any day, and I have the 28-70L mounted on the 5D. I'll need to re-arrange to make room for the Sigma and ther 28-70L. I did discover that I'm able to add a layer of foam padding on top of the 100-400 and store the 70-200 on top of that (or vice versa). This will leave plenty of additional room, and the lid will easily close, even with the lid liner attached. I don't transport this anywhere, simply used for storage in the closet.

Aside from other things, foam sucks in that through repeated removal and insertion of the gear, the little foam cells get lose and quicky looks really sloppy.

I called every photo store between Reno NV and Stockton CA (Including Sacramento) and nobody had the padded dividers on stock. I will be purchasing online, I am moving this weekend so I need to get that done before ordering. Otherwise my ex-wife will have a bonfire party with them.
As soon as I do get them (monday?) I will post them.
By the way, I am going with the double decker, and also the lid organizer, it all seems super cool.
Honestly, I do have my doubts about how snug the gear is inside such rugged case. Foam does the job well (from a technical point of view) but does not last worth crap.
Divider owners: Does your gear fit snugly as well, or you can hear the lenses and bodies go back and forth ?... My reason for this case is ultimate protection for the gear. Otherwise, some large hockey gear bag would do the trick ;)...
Thanks everyone for sharing so far, it's a topic I had not seen very often in these forums.

Had to re-arrange my Pelican 1560 case to free up some extra room. I was able to store the 100-400L on top of the 70-200L with foam in between. This freed up some valuable space while I'm still waiting for my long-overdue Sigma 150 macro (damn you, Amazon). I'd like to get some longer foam to put between the two large L's, though.

Very true!!.. turns out today I moved into a second story apartment, and the carrying of the container upstair was a bit less than pleasant. Leaving it inside the trunk overnight, in a state where you cannot shoot at the thugs stealing your gear, is also not an option.
So all in all, I am considering it as a modular solution, a good "bring all you got" case, but I am also keeping the shoulder bag and backpack for smaller, more dynamic assignments.
Now that I have a new address, padded dividers here I come !!!! ;)

That's how I'm using mine...dust-proof, moisture-free storage locker in the closet. When I head out, I take what I need in a pack and the rest stays behind. The lid liner is also a big help by keeping the small stuff controlled and in one place.
BTW...the orange foam pads shown above are extras from a pack that I have. They are not part of the Pelican set.

Thats exactly what I just ordered the 1624 for.

Well here's the pictures of my Pelican 1654 loaded with the gear in my sig. The 40d has the sigma 24-70 on it and the XTI has the Tokina 12-24 on it . Both bodies have grips(Canon) on them . The space in the middle is reserved for a 70-200 2.8 is:D I have just sold a couple lenses and plan and getting a few new ones soon. This case is almost big enough to hold some of the other things I like to shoot with:lol:

Nice photo divider pics. Definitely makes the 40D Cameras look tiny in there, makes me wonder if I could keep my 1D bodies attached to the 16-35 and 24-105, or any such combination. At any rate, the setup looks good (though not as snug as the foam).
Thanks for sharing, and point those things down range !!!... ;)

If you mean the difference in size . I have the inside dims. written down because those were the two I was comparing. The 1614 inside size is 22-3/16"X 17-1/8" X 10-9/16". The 1654 is 29" X 17-7/8"X 10-1/2". These sizes are length ,width, height.

Well from what I have read its got some AF issues. I thought a lot about getting that one but after reading all the "1D Mark III" like horror stories I decided against it and am waiting to see what the next rounds of rebates brings us as far as the 85L is concerned.

oh yeah, tip of the week for pelican users:
1- Always adamantly insist in carrying your own pelican case during your flight, and
2- Never reveal the contents of the case. If anything, leave a portion of the remote cable out of the case, and hold it, as if you had something to hide.
If you are attracting too much attention, just distract passersby by licking your shoes, or trying to set them afire.
:p
Sorry, but when I see other people carrying pelican cases (specially LEOs) you never know what's coming out of 'em.
(Disclaimer: Attempt brainless suggestions at your own risks, any arrests or sentences you may serve in Guantanamo Bay
will be frowned upon, but if you find some nice duck shots, those are always welcome).

Pelican has a page on their site showing which cases meet which airlines specifications (for size) for carry-on, checked, and oversized luggage. I've posted the link on here before, maybe even on this thread. 1520 is, IIRC, about the largest international carry-on.

Im pretty sure you remove the foam. Which of course means theres no padding (maybe a little in the back of the net itself) on the top do of the case. Thats why I didnt buy the lid organizer.

So let me ask you, is there any padding behind the storage compartments in the lid organizer? Up against the case lid I mean. Or is it just flat fabric against the lid?
curtd
4th of April 2008 (Fri), 15:36
There is no padding, just the rigid plastic that the mesh is attached to. I'm not worried about the stuff in the mesh being harmed by no padding. That doesn't seem to be an issue as I have all flat stuff in the lid organizer. The real problem is that stuff in the mesh will rub up against the stuff in the dividers when you close the lid, and that the smaller stuff in the dividers bounces around when closed. In other words, there is nothing to lay flat on top of the dividers to keep little stuff in place. So far, not much of a problem.

I just received my 1614, haven't put anything in yet. My lid organizer is on backorder. I'm wondering if laying a thin sheet of closed cell foam on top of the dividers would solve the rubbing problem as well the problem that curtd mentioned of keeping the smaller items better contained in the dividers. Has anyone tried something like this?

Oh Im sure it would work fine, especially seeing as how my 1624 never leaves the house anyway. I will probably order the lid organizer and figure some sort of padded sheet to protect it. Actually I was thinking of having my gf sew some soft fabric like velvet or something around a 1/4" or so piece of foam packing material and using that. I will def want the extra storage when I get my 1514 as that one will actually leave the house and the added compartments will be needed. In that case i think I would want something thicker (like maybe 1/2") as the functionality of the foam padding as protection will be more important.

I have a peli 1510 which is intended for approved long haul carry on use only. This means that it only carries stuff I can't replace reasonably easily and quickly at the other end in case of loss or delay. Everything else goes in cargo.
My Dell XPS 1330 fits perfectly with its power supply on the bottom layer. It's protected by a zipped neopren cover and foam strips across the top, which also helps support the top layer. My Lee filter holder and filters can go on top of the laptop and replaces one foam strip if necessary.
Top layer will hold two bodies on the right (the TCons would normally go on the left side of the laptop on bottom layer, where currently I have a mouse and charger lead. or they'll go in cargo) with the 5D body afixed to the little 24mm. Then a 400mm 5.6 L, 70-200mm IS L 4.0, 17-40mm 4.0 L. There are also two numbered batteries and the charger. 2x additional CF cards go in a small padded zip case beside the 400mm.

I must say it is really freakin' heavy for a small guy like me. The wheels are a must for this, I'll probably be dragging this thing across surfaces that the wheels weren't made for.
As you can see it JUST BARELY fits in my Ford Focus zx3 still allowing me to keep the seats up and subwoofer inside. Yikes!

SKB (most musicians know the brand) make a very similar cases to the Pelicans but I also like their wheels (it's a roller blade style)

well I use 3 different wheeled ones with padding - depending upon what I need. Generally most brand of cases have similar sizes. I wanted something that I could identify from across the room.
Like I said look to flea-bay where the company sells direct for significant savings over the regular street prices.
Huh okay, will do. Since you have more experience with the company though, what do they have that comparable to the Pelican 1514? LINK (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/330237-REG/Pelican_PC1514_Carry_On_1510_Case.html)Thats the one I was thinking of getting next...

I use the 2550WIC HPRC - it's has wheels and I have 2 interiors for it. The removeable bag that's included in the B&H item below and I also use the Pelican dividers when I don't need the cary case inside of the case...

I didn't know about HPRC until now...
the HPRC 2800 looks about the same dimensions as the pelican 1660 but with better wheels...hmmm tempting :-\
I'm not sure if the lid organizer and padded dividers of the 1660 will be compatible.

Hi Guys,
These Pelican cases are new to me about 2hrs ago to be exact..... ;)
I want something I can take on a plane.
Skimming through the thread I need something about the size of 1560 or i belive someone said the 1564 is nearly the same. Whats the difference please.
Also do all these cases have 2 layers?
Do they all arrive with foam in and you have to buy the dividers seperate?
Is the 1560 ok for taking on long haul flights?
If not which Pelicans are which is the next one down?
Again sorry for all the questions - all answers apprecated ;)

posting here for later reference. I'm trying to decide between a 1604 and a 1614. I want dividers obviously. I'd like to have a 100-400 standing vertically, will the 1604 do that or do I need the 1614? I'd prefer one w/o wheels.

1514 is the largest I would risk trying to take on a plane.

I will agree with ben on this one. Having been through oh so many flights recently, the stowaway space on board is very unforgiving for non-compressible baggage (Like my laptop bag, I sort of shimmied around until its contents redistributed, and was able to fit it properly. Good luck doing the same with a pelican, even if you're .5 inches long).
And to the airlines defense, their allowed carry-on volume is more than adecuate for any amateur or pro project. Just plan and rent your lights at your place of destination. ;)
Cheers,
