in the search for camera gear i came across this tri-pod

Yes I purchased one in October 2007 and am delighted with it.
MT8170 is an old model since superceded.

I searched on B&H and they have several pages of tri-pods

It will be the Carbon Fibre MT82** series.
Have a look at their website and scroll down to Carbon Tripods and you will see that there are different heights and weights to suit your needs.

I have the MT8180 and I absolutely love it. It is the next model larger than the MT8170. I either use it with the Manfrotto 3421 gimbal head or with a Giottos ball head and Arca type release. It works well with either head and supports my 400mm f/5.6L and 300mm f/4L IS lenses just great. The MT8180 is also discontinued but can be occasionally found on ebay in either used or new condition.

ah thank you. I think i'm going to get a manfrotto kit from b&h. I like these though!
