View Full Version : Where to find a Photo CHAIR

This has to be the stupidist question in the world, but I cannot seem to find the right wording search for the small 3 legged fold up photographers chair. I have seen them being used instead of having to stand the entire time during a sporting event or to just get more level with the subject...
What are they called and where can you buy them from?
Thanks :)

Hi,
I think that what you are looking for exists in sports stores where it is sold for hunters.
Light small, portable and available in camo colors.

Someone here pointed it out at Naturescapes.net. They call it a Walkstool, and it comes in 3 sizes. I don't have the exact link, but you should be able to find it in their online store.

Can you tell the OP where to buy one for $5?
I bought a Large from Naturescapes. A bit pricey, but very well built, light and comfortable. No regrets. I may even buy one of the taller versions. I did a quick check around before buying, and Naturescapes price is inline for the brand.

Yes...at a yard sale. Says in my post. I also mentioned Walmart or other stores. There's one there for $15.
What's with the $70 chairs? $70 for a tripod to hold my thousand dollars worth of equipment, sure. $70 to hold me and it...what? Made from titanium?

It swivels and is camo colored!!! Actually looking at it I want it. That Swiveling could come in handy.

the people that buy this chair often use it for 5-6 hours at a time so getting a good quality chair that you can trust is worth the extra $40-50...

edit: Man, you changed your post 3 times :), so my link is a re-post.
A much better buy. But, its a bit heavier, shorter seating, and doesn't support as much weight(not that 250lbs isn't enough). Can't tell from the photo, but it probably doesn't fold as small. $70 is through-away money with this hobby :)

^That's just something quick I found and yes weight is an issue. But given, I weigh 160lbs and that ones I've used never broke. My grandfather has some we use all the time and my 6'2" idk how much he weighs but a lot uncle sits in one.
AS mentioned before, I've went hunting many a time using one and so has my grandfather. And before anything else is said, no he did not buy some nice "professional" kind. More yard sale treasures.

My brother in law has a similar one for his fishing trip and I think it costed him around $15. It's comfortable but not freaking $89 comfortatle.
It's probably made in China for $2

This can work

As a posing stook, it lacks swivel seat and lacks any abilty to adjust height, or wheels! These at least are adjustable and swivel...

Blonde has a very good point here, as a Walkstool owner I can tell you that it is comfortable, extremely lightweight and well constructed. There is no comparison to be found in a discount store.

My problem with camping chairs is that I can never find one tall enough for using in a blind. The fabric chairs tend to sag and then I'm always straining to sit up higher. I'd love to have something where the height is adjustable, still searching for the perfect solution.

I seriously doubt that, the comparison part, not the other stuff. I'm sure it's well constructed and nice, better be for the price of two tank fill ups. I have cheap chairs longer than ya'll have so my comparison far beyond exceeds yours. I say this because this is what Jon and others always say about tripods and bags. The Domke you buy now you'll use 20yrs later. That's fine but bags are more personal so it's not always whether it lasts 20yrs or 5yrs, some people want a certain bag. As for these chairs, they look the same. While I've only hunted for 5yrs, those chairs are older than that and used much much longer. I say give or take a total of 15yrs use by my family. Now, recall, they were at a yard sale.
I just can't imagine spending that much on carry round chair unless it does something spectacular, like it's as comfortable as sitting on...heck, idk a leather Lay-Z-Boy.
The one B.D. posted would be about as expensive as I'd go and there better be something to it. His has an area to stow stuff under.

I just looked on ebay.
four legged stool with carry case. 12$
three legged one.. 18$ with shipping included.
In the army I used a 10$ folding stool and it was fine.
For me this is a 25$ MAX purchase. Everyone has their own taste and needs. Rockfordhx do a ebay for camping stool. Or Walmart and they MIGHT have one that is not camo or hunters orange.
Looking at the different price ranges it looks like the only difference is the cheap ones have a 250lb weight limit where the expensive one has 450lb. If you are over 250lb you should not be sitting on that anyway.

again i will ask you: have you ever seen, touched or used the walkstool? if the answer is no, than your comparison is actually worthless. i did buy the cheap stools (i actually have 2 in my truck as we speak) and i also own the walkstool so unlike you, i can actually compare the two chairs.

I seriously doubt that you have owned cheap chairs longer than I have as I am probably old enough to be your great grandfather! All kidding aside, at my age, comfort is important.
The money for the WalkStool would just about fill my car up once! I don't mind this because it allows me to go out and shoot longer and everyone knows that I need that by looking at my beginner attempts.
BTW - thanks Blonde and Jon for all the tips, you have saved me quite a bit of money.

Well I'll tell you, my son was home last week, spotted my GCI PackSeat from Rutabaga and was lusting after it so he could sit and watch soccer practice - so I gave him mine to take along home with him.
Then after looking over the Walkstool that blonde recommended, I bought the 26" one and it arrived today.
There's no doubt why it costs more than the others - no comparison in build and design. Much more comfortable, too. Perfect height for me and I'm only 5'7" - better for one's back to sit a bit higher and have the thighs angled slightly down rather than be parallel to the ground (I learned that with drummer's stools a long time ago).
I put a premium on comfort and safety, and as far as I'm concerned looking after one's lower back and rear end are worth more than any other photo accessory can ever be. And I wouldn't worry about this one coming apart or collapsing, it's made so well.

I can now tell you that after all's said & done, blonde was 100% on the money - the Walkstool's where it's at - way better than the others.
This is a simple case of getting what you pay for.
