I just got this and it's amazing but you have to use it all the time - when light conditions change -

I never had the desire for one. A pure white coffee filter will do the very same thing. So will a white sheet of typing paper. I only use custom white balance indoors when I do weddings and then sometimes very rarely.

Sorry for the silly question, but how do you use a Coffee Filter or White Paper rather than the ExpoDisc (as I understand it the ExpoDisc fits to your lens)?

You use it in the same way. Although the ExpoDisc comes with a filter thread, you would really have just one size that would accomodate all your applicable lenses and just hold it over the front of the lens rather than screw it on (unless you really want to take the time to use thread adapters).

The same with white paper/coffee filter -- hold it snugly over the lens and the camera "sees white" (or rather neutral gray). It's basically the same idea as shooting a sheet of white paper at a distance except with the ExpoDisk/Paper over the lens idea you're filtering in the ambient light rather than getting a reflection of the ambient light. The ExpoDisk does have the diffuser, which may or may not give it the edge -- you'd have to experiment with the different techniques and decide for yourself which works best for you.

but how do you use a Coffee Filter or White Paper rather than the ExpoDisc For a custom WB, just fill the frame & shoot on the meter. It will photograph gray, just what the cam needs for Custom WB. Use that exposure for the WB set-up.
Gray Card…White Paper. What’s best? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=58677)

For exposure: Need an exposure crutch? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=89123)

Remember those for when you forget your disk. ;)

Thanks for the replies - I think I'll have to try and experiment my end one of these days.
