Both pics seem to be suffering from compression though.

What can I do to stop the loss due to compression? if anything.

Sorry Barry, I said compression but there was some pixellation in the first pic around the 'U.S. Air Force. insignia and on the tail as well. When I was having the same trouble, I was pointed in the direction of sRGB as a possible problem but take a look HERE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=265690)for some tips on saving for the web.
