can anyone explain why when i forgot to put my cf card into my canon 300d it still showed the pic taken on the lcd screen. Do these shots register anywhere in the camera for recovery

No, it's gone. It's captured first to an internal buffer, but immediately pushed out the data bus onto the card (or where the card was supposed to be). The review image comes out of the buffer.

I believe with a 300D you can still use custom functions to set it to not be able to take a shot if the CF card is missing. That's what I do. It would be a nightmare to be assigned to shoot an event only to find out there was no card in the camera.

I'd turn this 'feature' off if I were you!

Alas there's no such feature available on the DReb/300D. On the XT/350D and later it's available as a menu choice, not a custom function, so that it affects the Basic Zone too.

You're right, it is a menu choice, not a custom function, but still... I think it's dangerous to allow the camera to shoot without the card regardless of what mode you're in, at least if your shots are important at all. But, just my opinion.
