Mostly shoot sports and when shooting mountain bikes usually find myself in places with low or bad light. I understand that the embedded flash restricts the shutter speed at 1/200 and that's not always enough for what I'm trying to capture.

Is there a way to bypass or change that restriction? If not, how can I determine which flash to get? I'm new to this flash thing and have no clue on what to look for.

The camera is a Canon 400D.

Your 1/200 is the camera max sync speed so getting around it will be difficult. The easiest way is with high speed sync. a function available on Canon EX flashes.

But before going there I would strongly suggest reading the stickies at the top of this forum. They walk you thru all the questions you have about flash and could save you lots of time and money.
