what is wrong with this?

i like this picture, but what is wrong with it? how can i make it better?

I'd try some local contrast enhancement. In case you don't know how to do local contrast enhancement: In Photoshop, duplicate the background layer, set the blending mode of the duplicate to Luminosity and then use the Unsharp Mask filter on that layer. Your settings should be Amount 5-20%, Radius 30-100 pixels and a Threshold of 0.

Compositionally speaking, I think you could have stood further from the left and shot the pier (that is a pier right?) so that it ran on a diagonal from the lower left hand corner of the frame to the upper right hand corner. The sun being in your shot really doesn't help matters as it draws the eye away from the pier.

Wow, thanks for the tips. it's actually not a pier, it's some little bridge thing that comes off the top of a dam about 30 minutes away from home. here is the diffrence between the shots. thanks again for the tips:

There really isn't a focal poiunt.somewhere to lay your eyes to rest...the closest item would be the very first part of the pier......from there on its soft...can you see it?
