Hi, my name is Ange. thought i would try this critique forum out as a lot of my images i seem to be undecided about and i dont always trust my judgement. i have photos that i have thought were absolute rubbish that other people have really liked so here we go

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r141/ange2348/080223_5948-Edit.jpg

i took this as the sun was heading towards sunset with a quite moody sky and i think that i adjusted 2 stops down

canon 400d
EF-S17-85mm
ISO 200
1/100
f22
53mm
cropped, adjusted levels, curves in PS

does it interest you or just boring?? there are things that interest me but i'm not sure if it is really a strong enough image.

thanks in advance

I think it's a really cool shot. I love the feel, but I also like the variations you can get just with autolevels and autocolor adjustments.

BTW, what is the significance of the letters on the clock face?

Good work,
Kevin

I think you did a good job. I like the effect of the underexposure. Did you think of trying a vertical shot?

It is one of those subjects that has good potential and probably not easy to capture that potential on the first run. The post processing shows some choices but I think the original needed better exposure to capture detail and that would have been a good thing all around. There are a couple things like this in my 'mental portfolio' that I still have not gotten 'just so'. The only thing to do is keep going back.

joe - i do in fact have a vertical shot as well i will work on it and post so you can see..

kevin - the letters are the name of the shop Dimmey's, i think it is a bit of a Melbourne icon thanks for the rework ideas

different version - played with levels and curves again but i cant help but think it isnt straight. i have used the grid lines to try and straighten it - maybe i am cross eyed?

@ange2348:

I took the liberty of trying some lens distortion correction (PS CS3: Filter>Distort>Lens Correction), particularly the Vertical Perspective and Remove Distortion sliders. The vertical perspective slider sort of simulates the effect of a tilt-shift lens, which helps bring the parallel vertical lines of the edge of the building back to parallel. There was also some rotation of the image that I took out. All of this required more cropping to get rid of the uneven edges resulting from the correction. Is the attached image less visually disorienting?

Hope this helps - nice image BTW. i sort of like the uncorrected (original, distorted) image better - the perspective sort of makes the building loom, especially with the foreboding background. maybe just rotate the image a tiny bit clockwise so the building doesn't appear to lay back toward the left of the frame so much.
