View Full Version : Which ND Grads for Cokin P Filter

I've acquired a Cokin P filter holder. I plan on doing some landscape work in the near future. Any advice on which filters would be useful.

I was thinking of a 2 stop hard ND grad and possibly a soft grad. But I hear that the Cokin filters aren't neutral. I've been looking at the Lee filters, but will they fit the holder I have?

Many thanks

I don't have any brands other than Cokin but I'd also add that my Cokin grads are not neutral, a slight green cast in both, but minor.

Thanks for the quick response. Do you have any pics to demonstrate the cast?

I use the 121L (ND2), 121M (ND4) and 121 (ND8) and have never noticed any kind of colour caste.

Holding the filter up to the light I see only a mid grey fading to clear.

It may well be that if a large enough lump of the plastic is cut and polished, then a colour caste might be visible, but in the thin sheets used for the filters in general photographic use its not an issue.

Will Lee & Hitech filter fit in the Cokin P holder?

Hitech will fit in the Cokin holder but I've Dremel'd off all but the closest to the lens slot so its a little tight but it fits. Not sure about Lee though 'cos my pockets ain't that deep !!

Perhaps keep in mind the Singh-Rays.. they are quiet nice.

Singh-Ray ? Aren't they twice the price of Lee :-)

HiTech will work fine.

Hitech looks tempting. I take it I'm buying the 85mm Hitech filters for the Cokin P holder?

Could someone confirm before I pull the trigger on some hard ND grads?

Many thanks

Yes. I have a hitech filter among my cokin P series filters and it is 85mm.

Well, they're good. You also get them made to order. If you want a 2.5x grad, or a 90-10% split, or half way between a soft and a hard grad, or an extremely hard grad, they'll do it.
