This beautiful Kookaburra, or "JackAss" is a native Australian bird whose call sounds like a human having a huge laugh. To be fair - he does look as though he is smiling :) This bird is a member of the kingfisher family, and will feed on small lizards, snakes, mice - and even small mammals.
I'm told their laugh is fairly strange to people from overseas - an Indian friend of mine spent 30 minutes looking for the person laughing at him when he went for his first walk through the bush. He looked fairly sheepish when he figured out it was 'just a bird'.

Nice shot of a great bird. Non-Australian friends thought it was like the sound of monkeys!
Cheers

REL
Is it REL ... ly you ? Nice to see you back posting.
Well my name is not Jack so I will say that I love this guy (or gal). And (as In recall) you pulled this off with a G2. Excellent -- or you had some feed in your hand!
I like the second one best. But I think that I would have lassoed the right hand branch and dropped the blue reflection using hues.

Rel,
nice one, especially considering you used the G2... :)
Howie,
there's no need to try and lure these guys with food - they'll pinch your steak right off the BBQ! (Then they land and "kill" it by twisting and smacking it into the ground which is rather entertaining and takes a little of the sting out of the realisation that you now have nothing to eat... :D)

Thanks for your comments guys :) It is nice to be back posting.
Didn't have any feed in my hand Howie - but probably could've gotten an even closer shot if I did LOL It was a very well behaved bird, and just sat there and watched me trying to get a shot of it... and yes Damian, it did laugh at me :)
Rudi - beautiful job of explaining how these guys 'kill' their food. lol.... should explain that the best way to kill a snake if you are going to eat it (if you are a bird that is) is to bash the buggery out of it on the ground :) lolol
And hey guys - what's up with the G2???? lol (one day when I grow up, I'll get an EOS... or when I win the lotto) ;)
