Picture was taken on 'kit' lens w/o a filter. Is there a method to tame down the flare seen in the picture? I'm using GIMP and took a quick glance at the tutorial site, but not much help was available on there. Thanks!

First of all I have no idea what the comparable transactions are in GIMP.

I found that the strip of darker area from the top of the trees to the snow didn't add a whole lot to the image. So I did an adjustment layer to make this area basically black. This managed to darken most of the flare area directly below the sun. I created another new layer and painted in some more black to take just about all of it out, leaving a very minor glow to this area.

At this point I could have quit but I didn't. I used one of my downloaded star brushes and sampled the sun for the first color. I put this star in right on top of this sun, again on a new layer. I then made the star just a little bit smaller and samples the red in the clouds. I reduced my brush opacity and then put some of this color on top of the yellowish star. I then added some gaussian blur to soften out the star.

I left your foreground which I feel ads some dimension to the image.

Wow, I like that! Appreciate the time and effort you put into it.

Couple questions if you don't mind. First, this star brush sample you speak of, where by chance did you get it from? Secondly, if you still have the image saved, would you mind sending me a higher-resolution of it. With the attachment being so small, it was really difficult for me to make out how you approached the area under the sun. Thanks again!

Huh? Not sure I understand. Are you questioning to my educational background or perhaps are you referring to my appreciation being somewhat lack-lustering in details? I fail to see the direct relation of education level and familiarity with photo-editing processes. Nonetheless, I will explain my point of view.

In my defense, I do not fully understand everything ssim did to derive the product, as I've only tinkered around with photo-editing software for a couple days now. If I fully understood all work done by ssim, I probably would have had a better developed response. From my limited experience with photo-editing, I find myself learning by trying to derive what others' have done in their PP works. Correspondingly, my response questioned ssim for a larger resolution of his PP, along with information pertaining to the brushing effect he did.

Ssim, I apologize if I came off as taking your effort half-heartedly, but I'm sure you can relate being a novice in photo-editing and not always fully grasping what one does without trying it for yourself. Again, I appreciate the effort and explanation.

Uh, whoa there, friend. Calm down.

I meant nothing whatever by the question except that I was curious about your choice of forum name. I have a passing interest in languages and wondered if you chose the name because you're a language scholar. Not many others even know what Sanskrit is...

Ah well then, I apologize for my misunderstanding. It is just that your quote and questions threw me a bit off.

Good to see another cultured individual! Are you currently studying any particular languages?

In regards to your questions; no, my particular educational background is not language. Actually, I'm a cellular biologist! Hah, go figure! However, I do fancy reading about cultural history. In particular, I find the Indus Valley region fascinating.
