Thanks Joan. Right when I saw this my flash started playing up. Only 3 of about 9 shots turned out ok :(

The victim was still alive during all this. Legs moving etc. I didn't realise those flies were carnivorous!

Excellent capture Troy - yes the Dolichopid flies do seem to be insectivores but I've never caught them at it like this. Think those are male and female chironimid midges so the fly might have snuck up whilst they were otherwise occupied.

Thanks Brian. There were heaps - like hundreds - of these midges at the parklands in the city this morning. And I've seen heaps of those flies before - they're really skittish when the flash goes off. Usually you just end up capturing the leaf where they were a second ago. Was really happy to get this action shot.

Good shots. Bummer about the flash. I've got a fair collection of leaf photos too from trying to get a shot of these :)

Thanks for the comments guys :)

I spent half an hour one morning trying to get these things flying. I had been trying to get some shots of them stationary and had the usual problem of them taking off and just getting leaf. So I thought I'd aim the camera higher and shoot where they'd be when the flash took off. No luck that day, but may have to try it again.
