How could I have taken a better shot considering:
1. It was a very sunny day
2. The light house is painted brilliant white
3. I have a 330
Cheers

PS - Why can't I post images direct to the site? I keep getting an error message about direct linking denied

That's a question I'd like to know the answer to also. Maybe a nuetral density filter?
As far as embedding a photo I beleive you have to be a paid supporter of pbase. Don't quote me on that though.
BTW, awsome scenery shots. I'd love to visit some day.

1. Polarizing filter
2. Must be paid supporter, then be sure to add ".jpg" after the photo page name.

There are a number of techniques - a good standard one is to use a polarizer to reduce glare and to bracket your shots (using about 2/3 f-stop). The underexposed photo will come out better.
In the case of a significant exposure latitude problem you really have to expose for the object you want to feature. If it is the lighthouse, then trying a couple of shots that are significantly underexposed (by 1 to 2 f-stops) would be worthwhile. You can return some of the detail in the deep shadows areas that result by using contrast masking:
www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast_masking.shtml
or ... if you just want to cheat - shoot the shot on a tripod, doing a general exposure (such as your photo) and then exposing just for the lighthouse, and then cut & paste the properly exposed lighthouse into your properly exposed background and no one will be the wiser.
Have fun!

I can't really add to what has been said.
Polarising filter usually helps..... depending on angle
of the image in relation to the sun position.
Personally I think the photo is great.
Am I looking at the right one ? South Stack Light ?
Lovely photograph as it is.
As for Pbase, I think they are correct.
As far as I know the guy asks for a donation to use the
facility to be able to move photos from his site to
another site.
email him and get an idea how much he wants.
Let us know what he says, as quite a few of us are
interested to know the answer.
Kind regards

He is looking for any size of donations - but suggests either $23 or $60. Seems a good deal to me!

Thanks for the quick reply, Damian
Yes, I think the guy is being very reasonable.
It must be quite a lot of extra work arranging for
images to be copied to another site.
Thanks again.
