Maybe on the wrong subject slighty, but has anyone had experiences in using this lens for sports. Is it as quick as the glorious Canon 70-200mm f2.8?

I've heard good stuff about this lens. Its IS I believe as well.
300mm F4 with IS and a 1.4x TC :) would give a nice IS prime :)

I love my 300mm F/4L IS for shooting sports. After a lot of consideration between it and the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, I decided to go with the 300mm first, and I think I made the right decision. I think I'll have problems with the F/4 shooting night sports which I haven't tried yet. I'm considering picking up a 200mm f/2.8 for that, and for times when the 300mm is too long with the 1.6x crop.
I also tried a friends 300mm f/2.8L IS, and it is a GREAT lens, but very tiring to hold. You can hand hold the 300mm F/4L IS all day long (not to mention saving $2500).
Here are a few pics I got from a couple of weeks ago:

And these were from last weekend on a totally overcast day, and I still managed a few good shots:

BTW, in case you didn't notice,

This is of course assuming someone didn't do a search for this thread a year from when I originally posted this and I have the 400mm f/2.8L as my avatar now.

Thanks for your views pcasciola, nice pix. I maybe be tempted if one comes up on E-bay. My only concern was the speed to react.
Ta very much

I don't have the EF70-200/2.8 to compare the autofocus speed.
But my 300/4L non IS is pretty fast for autofocus. I just took air show photos with it on a 1D1 last week. It's fast enough to track the fighter jet kinds. A 300/4L + 1.4TC, however, slows down the autofocus speed a bit.

Thanks, any info is very useful. I don't think a striker in the Coca Cola league 2 has a 'lightening burst' as a fighter jet so I think I could take a chance on this lens!!!

If you have a EF70-200/2.8, would it be better to have a 400/5.6L?
