View Full Version : A very sad day

Well, I picked up my camera Friday, because I haven't used it at all in a few months, and that needed to change. I went to a local county park to shoot through a few rolls of film. By the end of the day, I was fairly sure I had gotten a few good shots. On my way home, I dropped my film off at my local film developer (because I have yet to obtain my DSLR and I can't develop my own film).
Today, I went to pick up my film, somewhat excited to see my shots. When I got them back, I noticed something was very wrong. Either the fellows at the store messed up, or my film was all kinds of messed up. Some frames had strange spots on them, and others had huge black streaks. Anyone feel like telling me if I should be mad at the store, or do I just need to get around to getting the XTi?
Examples from messed up roll attached.

Well, emulsion does go bad. I didn't really notice too much except for the last post.. looks a tad wrong to me. Get another roll of film and shot and develop it. COuld have been a bad roll, or the roll went bad. Get that XTi.. and join the fun.

Well, it was two rolls that were messed up, however, they both came from the same box ( which I bought a while ago, which is what I'm blaming it on...old film). However, I did notice that shadows of the notches in the edge of the film (the ones that let the camera wind the film) show up on a few frames, so I'm assuming it's a combination of bad film and the store messing up.

Doesn't look like an extremely good processing job...looks as if two layers of film came together during the mix ....

If the emulsion's damaged, you'll be able to see it on the negs. Might be the film went bad; might be something got past their water filter. Might have been a lot of things, some outside anybody's control.

I took a peek at the negs, and the spots and streaks were on them, but the shadows of the notches were only on the actual photos, so I'm just gonna quit complaining and learn from this whole thing. The moral of today's story: get a DSLR or use fresh film.
A bit off topic, but I'm really curious. What film do you folks use?

Film? What is film?
Sorry to be unhelpful :p

When I shoot film, it's Ilford FP4+ and HP5+ B&W.

No film anymore.. Tho, I love the depth of color in film. Those days are gone for me.

Then it's official. I'm going to save up for a DSLR. I've heard good things about the XTi. I'm open to suggestions, however, keep in mind that I'm an unemployed college student still living with his parents, so money is a huge issue.

The last one looks like the emulsion was scratched when the film was wet, and the lizard shot looks like the processing machine left some crud on the neg.

I've decided to try my damnedest to get a DSLR, and after searching around here, the 30D seems to be pretty popular. I think I'm going to save up and get a 30D if possible. One question though. The three lenses I already have for my humble K2, I assume they will work with the 30D being that they're all Canon products?

Oh, yes, they'll work. Bear in mind, however, that the smaller sensor ofthe 30D (or the XTi, for that matter) gives them a narrower FoV; for instance, 28 mm on the 30D will take about the same picture as a 50 mm on a 35 mm film SLR. (DoF will differ; coverage will be about the same).

To be completely honest, I'd have one in my hand right now if I had the money. However, I'm completely broke. I haven't had a job in about eight months.
