Love # 2. The lighting works well.

Thanks. It was a plus that they had great lighting since all of these shots were taken at night.

Some nice first attempts I take it you were using the 50mm?

I was using the 18-55mm. I was in the second row, so I was really close to the stage fortunately.

Ah I would suggest that you get a faster lens if you are going to be doing more concerts need a max aperture of 2.8 but ideally faster. 50mm 1.8 is a great little concert lens.

Thanks!! I will definately look into that.

P.S. I love that Sum 41 photo on your site.

Cheers.

There were all shot on 5D with 50mm 1.4 or 24-70mm 2.8

Hi Shelly and welcome aboard. Good effort for your first gig but definitely room for improvement.

The first two are out of focus - the focus is on the singer's arm/elbow rather than on his face.

The third photo is very soft; I'm not sure exactly why it could be due to camera shake or movement of your subject which can be alleviated by using a faster shutter speed.

Burrelly is right in suggesting faster lenses.

Personally I'd forego the 50mm f1.8 unless money is really tight as it's AF performance in low light isn't as good as some of the alternatives.

If you are considering prime lenses I suggest you look at the Canon 50mm f1.4, the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and the Canon 85mm f1.8 - all very good quality fast primes with excellent low light AF capability.

If you are shooting shows in small venues right up close to the performers the Sigma is your friend.

If you are looking at zooms you should check out the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS, the Canon 24-70 f2.8L and one of the 70-200 f2.8 lenses (the Canon L IS is the king of this brigade but there is a quality Sigma lens in this focal length).

Good luck with it and I look forward to seeing more of your work here.

Thanks for the C&C. I'm still getting used to keeping a steady hand. The main problem I had was people around me bumping me. This was kind of a trial/error thing. I will definately be looking into the lenses Burrelly and you suggested. Thanks again for the advice. It helps more than you know.

I kinda like the first two.
Lighting is pretty hard (not much you can do) and focus is maybe a bit off (but almost within DoF as far as I can see), but nice.

Colored lighting like that is always going to be difficult to shoot in. It just removes any tone and texture.
