Nothing scientific here. I just compared the following:
Canon 18-55 (rebel Kit Lens)
Canon 28-80 USM V
Tamron 28-75
I tried about 27 pictures (9 on each lens). Someday, I might put up the other 25, but this is what I have for now.
The 18-55 didn't seem to be anywhere close to the other two lenses, so I did not bother adding it to this picture.

Yep the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and the Canon 50mm 1.8 are the two best values in Canon lenses in my opinion.
It's funny to bounce between my 100-400L at almost $1500 and a $69 50mm lens. Talk about a weight difference!

All images in this (http://www.pbase.com/hjminard/misc) gallery were shot with the Tamron. Most are "as is" out of the camera, although a couple had minimal sharpening.
I love this lens - amazing for the $$$ IMO.

Hi to all,
Nice to see that everyone likes this lens, I do as well.
The only thing that I suggest is that we should not all go rushing out at once to get it but gradually get it so that Tamron does not rethink its pricing and bump it up because of the sudden demand. LOL
Rob
P.S. I did notice that some of the lenses are a little stiffer in zooming than others but they do loosen up.

Don't worry aam1234, I'm going to pick up a 6pack tonight. :D
BTW, I noticed you wanted me to win the last contest(speed). Any particular reason?
I'm shocked I ended up in 2nd though.

We are both 1st class noobs, we have to stick together, otherwise the pros will eat us alive :D

Whats wrong with it's focus speed? I've used it to shoot race cars at over 100mph whilst using AI Servo on the 10D. Seems quick enough. Granted it's noisier than a USM lens (but then you can't hear it over the engines so it's not a problem  )

Well, I've shot a race with it too, and true, you don't even hear it focus :)
In comparison to the 100-400 USM focusing I do feel it is slower... Perhaps it also depends on what camera the lens is?

It may well be slower than the 100-400L, to be honest I haven't deliberately set out to compare them. I know that I have never missed a shot because of focus speed problems on the Tamron so from that perspective it is "fast enough" :)
