View Full Version : Best idea for a camera bag

I am 100% sure I am not the one to think of this but I have not seen anyone do this yet. I bought a igloo lunch box to use as a camera bag. The camera fits perfect and I can put all my other goodies in the top pocket. Another reason this is a good idea is its just a stupid lunch with a day old baloney sandwich in it and not a camera bag with $1500 worth of camera equipment in it. Just thought I would share this with you all for those that needed a great $14 camera bag.

Good idea, some camera bags really do give away what you're carrying. Can you get your 600mm in there too? ;)

Not a bad idea for the urban shooting with a small kit.

i've used the same type for my 30D for a long time, it does fit nicely, minimal storage
though, but great for those compact shoots.

Is there enough padding?

Yes I think so. I would not drop off the roof but its nice, The top is real hard. Well built. Best bag idea for $14. I found this one at target. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2343/2308190956_c4d5ba3361_o.jpg

Great idea. And you can always put a roast beef with swiss on rye in there with it!

haha, i love bag ideas like this...

I was reading through the forums when i first started and there was a thread about a person who went on vacation in Europe and he asked which bag to bring. Someone mentioned a diaper bag and i always thought that would be a great idea....how many people would steal a diaper bag ahahahaaa

I was just looking at a cooler backpack today. Small type, but made as a backpack for like a single or couple lunch. I'm going to check them out more on wednesday, my day off work.

And it was that company, I work at Target, stocked some of those today. Although now no one can call the Nova 3 "The Cooler" when someone actually uses one now. :p

I carried my old tamron 70-300 around in an OR water bottle "parka". It was great for backpacking, plenty padded and such.

would there be any reason not to use a cooler type bag for your camera gear...im thinking some type of moisture will seep in there and not be able to air dry, trapping humidity inside with your gear...

Just make sure the ice doesn't melt. :) Take it one step further...get a cooler with wheels and a pull handle...then you can carry all of your gear and never be without. A friend of mine actually did that when he was shooting HS baseball games...some games were usually back-to-back, he had whatever gear he needed, and the cooler doubled as a seat during breaks. Made it real easy to lug everything back to the car.

I'm a bagaholic myself...I've one of those coolers, in a smaller size...
my larger go-to bag is this...

I've got 30D/300mm (MF Nikkor) in it along with a 200, 135, 85 in the main cabin (there are two "pockets" for the smaller lenses)...and 50 and 24-85 in the front pocket (or a 350D/24-85 instead)...well padded and a solid base with hard rubber pads...

Just thought I'd post the inside of this diaper bag....don't know why there'd be such nice padding on the sides (I did add a bit of sponge to the base), unless the parents threw the baby in with the diapers...
The lenses in the outside pocket are in perfect fitting compact PnS cam bags...

Kit - love the Eddie diaper bag. Are the interior side pockets for the smaller lenses padded? I would be nervous about having the smaller lenses clank against the camera body and larger lens. Very clever idea though!

The OP has a nice idea, been looking for what I call a around town bag, one that is just big enough for the 40D, flash and one extra lens (well maybe not the extra lens). Don't want to carry one of my backpacks around town all day but still want to have the camera handy and protected.

Yes. the inner pockets are padded. The only added padding I added was a layer of 3/4" egg crate foam to the bottom. The outside base has some structure, unlike most diaper bags, as well as the kind of spiked rubber pads found on the bottom of laptop bags...(the outside pocket with the lenses has no padding, hence the PnS cam bags for the lenses there)...
Another issue...the top zipper seals to the top only with velcro at the end, and so I wrap the pull cord around the shoulder strap base and secure it with a carabiner to the two outside zippers so THEY can't be opened either without effort...I've heard too many stories among travelers of gear stealthily removed from bags...

When i got my camera 2 months ago, i got some small tamrac bag but since then has quicky been filled up. So i started to use my lunch bag for all of the stuff that didnt fit in the camera bag. haha. That has been filled up now as well.

I am investing into a large Backpack bag this week, along with some other goodies!

Couldn't you throw in some of those little pellet things?

HighLife

ya, i guess you could...but depending on how much moisture is in there, it might not be enough.

Maybe keep some of those silicate packs you get when you buy some stuff...i believe thats supposed to take the humidity out of the air.. I dunno how much it will remove though..

I dunno, i just see something like a cooler bag being a nice humid steam bath for your gear...

True, but I've never had problems with lunch boxes when I keep stuff in it.
