Hello all,
I've just bought a Canon 20D and an Elan 7NE, and would like your recommendation on some lens for my kit.
I'd like to take photo from macros to tele stuffs.
I'm looking to get up to 3 lens so please give me some recommendation as to what I should get to cover all my needs. I'd like to have somewhat of a complete kit to travel around with.
I was looking at these:
Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens
Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens
Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens
Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens
Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens
Please tell me what you think. 8)
Thanks,
Ryan

The EF-S lenses just hit the market so there arent alot of reviews on them, the 75-300 IS isnt a faverable lense and for just a few bucks more you can get the 70-200 f4 "L" witch is a super lense. The 100mm macro is a super lense, and I have the 28-135, its an above average consumer lense but in my opinion its to slow.

Why isn't the 75-300 a favorble choice...sorry for the dumb question? :P

Its not a horable lense, its just not very sharp and its pretty slow, and for how much that lense costs you could have way better image guality and a faster apiture for a few bucks more. Heres a link for reviews

Check out a bunch of lenses, including sigma and tamron
many people think the tamron 28-75 2.8 is a best buy for money/quality
the canon 50 1.8 is 80 bucks and is as sharp as a $1000 "L" zoom
sigma 70-200 2.8 ex hsm is $800 or less and gets awsome reviews (if you go with a sigma product I would sugest getting an EX modle, its there pro line, the non EX consumer lenses arnt highly regarded.

You know what...thanks for mentioning the Canon 50 f/1.8, I did hear great things about it.
I also heard not so great things about Sigma...I guess just the lower models then?

Every manufacturer has poor lenses and great lenses.
First off, buy the nifty fifty, even if you don't need it. It's one of those too good to be true lenses, sure it has a plastic body, but you want image quality, and you get that and some.
I think if you tell us what you are willing to spend and what you rather spend, we can help you better. There are many lenses from different manufacturers that will do great, but they also have a wide variety of prices.
Also, how big are you into photography? are you very serious etc etc.

And remember the EF-S 10-22 will not work on the Elan 7e

Thanks for all you help - it's great!
Yeah, I'm pretty serious about this now. I've been out of it for awhile but now I want to get back into the swing of thing. I'm just out of touch with all the hardware that's all! :D
I'm willing to spend to a certain extend. I'd like to buy hardware that last especially lens because I might upgrade the camera later but I do plan to keep my lens. I'll buy one at the time if I have too but I don't want to be frustrated with the wrong hardware.
Hope that answer your question. :)
Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan,
you have to decide what kind of photography you want to do ...
some great lenses at moderate prices are:
telephoto ... then get the 70-200/4.0L ($ 600?)
standard range ... do a forum search for the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI ($ 350)
wide angle ... the Canon 17-40/4.0L ($ 600)
You can use all these lenses on both of your cameras, and they are lenses that you will keep.
Best regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy,
That's what I was looking for...something to start that would be well rounded enough for my kit.

Might I ask what the "nifty fifty" is?

They're referring to the EF 50mm f/1.8 - it's only ~$80 and supposedly takes great picture, with very good sharpness. I've read a lot of great reviews on it.
It's very cheap quality when you hold it but for the picture quality, and the price...you can always buy another one if you happen to break it. :)
I went with the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM instead for my set.

Thanks Ryan. That's just the lens that robertwgross recommended I get, when I said I was trying to take pictures with a very narrow depth of field. I think i'll add it to my list of whatever I end up ordering :)

For light budget:
50 1.8
17-40 f4L
85 1.8 (great for portraits)
70-200 2.8L (non - IS used isn't as expensive)
or
70-200 f4
For a bit more cash:
50 1.4
17-40 f4L (worth every penny)
85 1.8
70-200 2.8L IS
I don't have any experience with the Tamron or sigma lenses but those who do say good things about them and they can be much cheaper than Canon.
But remember: "The bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of the low price is forgotten."
I've also heard great things about the 100 f2.8 and you said something about macro shooting. I think it is a macro lens and very sharp.
