So, do you read a thread, then respond?

Bored, inquiring people want to know.

;)

Pete

Have you tried searching the forum?

:p

Ah, our first poll response.

"Write first, ask questions later."

I try to read the thread first, and have to admit that if it is alreadya few pages long tend to give it a miss....

Sometimes if you just post you end up making a fool of yourself....;)

Found that out the hard way and all....

If I have a question I read replies to see if it's been answered already...I have been known to ask when the answer is already there, but I try not!

If I have a comment or critique I write it first...sometimes.

:)

It drives me absolutely bonkers when I read through a thread, see the direction it's taken since the initial post, respond accordingly, and then see replies after mine that obviously miss everything that had gone on after the initial post.

There are other people in the world who participate on this forum. If they've bothered to take the time to post in a thread I'm reading, the least I can do is read what they said. It might save me from considerable embarrassment, or *gasp* I might even learn something.

If it's 75 pages I read the first 4 or 5 and the last 4 or 5, then post. Other wise I read the whole thread. Especially if it's a question, no need to repeat something already said.

CyberDyneSystems
3rd of March 2008 (Mon), 15:03
Reading the whole thread is a double edged sword.
I do (or try to ) read the whole thread.
But just as often as replying to the initial questions is now rendered moot by previous responses, you will also find just answering the OP is best as the topic may have gone so far off that the OP never got a good reliable answer!

I try not to drink and post, as, I dont pay attention to detail when drinking.

Bootsie
3rd of March 2008 (Mon), 15:17
I try to read all the posts first but if it is a few pages long I usually just read the whole first page then post. If it is 10+ (or so) pages then I usually read the first few pages, then post.

S.Horton

We're quite a civilised bunch here, believe it or not.

S.Horton
3rd of March 2008 (Mon), 19:45
I believe that.

Now, true enough for those who picked up on the poll, but I have noticed many, many threads where content is just clearly not being read.

In those cases, it looks like the thread is about posting, not learning.

So, do you read a thread, then respond?
hortonsl62,
I always try to read all the thread, because why answer a question that has already been answered. However if it hasn't been answered right (at least to my thoughts), then I share my answer :)

Then there is the going off topic, and sometimes I chime in with my opinion or knowledge. It really depends on the topic and the mood :)

This thread looks soft, you should send it back to Canon for calibration.

I think a russian copy of a broncia thread would be better.

Mark_Cohran
3rd of March 2008 (Mon), 22:53
If the thread is only a couple of pages long, then I'll read the whole thing. If it's several pages long I'll read the posts of members who I know to be reliable sources of information. If the question has been answered, I'll only post if I can add something to the thread. If the question has not been complete answered or incorrect answers have been given, I'll provide an additional response.

Somehow I suspect I am the only one who even tried to multi-choice the poll ........ and found out that it does :D

I try to read the first page and last page the first time I come across it. All of it if it is 3pgs or less ... then post.

I find it more annoying when the OP doesn't seem to read the whole thread. Post an answer to their question and then a few posts later, they're still asking the same question.

I scan through all or most of the posts before responding; if what I have to say has already been said then there's no point in wasting my time typing it out again :p

KirkHMB

I try to read them all, and if really long,I'll search before I answer to avoid posting "tripod for my Canon" stuff. If its really really long, I give up and don't post, as I assume someone somewhere might have made a mistake and actually answered the OPs question.

I usually read them all if I want to post... but in reading them, I find that many ppl either don't read or don't comprehend the meaning of most posts... it is a bit annoying. Of course, maybe I just don't get what they're saying... but I doubt it.
I would like to add though, that POTN is the best forum for.... having an actual discussion out of all the forums I've seen under any topic....

This thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=461156 is the poster child for this poll.

I'm particularly fond of some posts in the #52 to #79 range.

Interestingly, most of the people who are posting replies to this thread are also the ones who OBVIOUSLY use the search function prior to posting a question. I however do not.

So which on is better: the 70-200 F/4L or 70-200 F2.8IS?

I try to read all the responses before posting. Of course, I don't usually post in a
thread that's more then 2-3 pages long before I get onboard....

It works the other way too... It irritates me to no end when the OP asks a perfectly legitimate question and provides some background information and then someone else comes along in the very next post and asks "did you do this and that" when the OP said they did in the original post...

I think that's the kind of answer that fits in the write first, ask questions later category. Now if only there was a read the subject line, write without reading the post, you'd have it nailed. ;)

I think you'd be much better suited to an 85 - 33 L USSM IRS 311 ooh ooh aar lens

....that way you'd have depth of focus over the rim light on everything you capture.
of course you can buy that at any reputable crockery shop.

I'm sorry, what?

How about the threads where the OP gets his question answered in the first several responses and the thread goes on for another 500 posts with everyone saying the same thing over and over?

I'll excuse that particular one. But only because it inspired a round of "maybe I should read the manual before I post" thoughts. ;)

Wonder if there should be a parallel post:
"When I have a question, do I ... search, research, read, or ask first...?
...but from what I see on most boards, I already know the answer...

I try to read the thread first, although I've been caught-out a time or two.
If it's a long thread, like multiple pages, I try to read it all, but I may have a nap first.

I do skim through some of the really long posts. Some people can be very wordy at time's.

I read then post if appropriate. I always have a bit of a laugh when I se the same answer given time after time several minutes apart. If the question has been answered correctly I won't respond, if the question has been answered incorrectly I will answer. If I don't know the answer I will sometimes hang around until someone does.

BTW I read this thread before posting this and I will vote as soon as I have hit the reply button :-)

I think CDI is actually an LA-based comedy writer looking for a diversion.

On a real note, 10:1 people read the threads.

I'm impressed.

Oh, and PC, all the way; my Mac only does iTunes.
