I know this is the Canon Forums, but does anyone think there should be some space for shooters of other brands ?

Lots of people here have cameras other than Canon's and while the Photo Sharing section welcomes all photographs, if someone wants to talk about gear it's either Canon or nothing.

Maybe it should stay this way, but I'd like to hear other members input on having a small forum ( not an entire section ) named for example " Gear from brands other than Canon " or something.

Take Nikon for example, does anyone know how tough it is to read a decent forum about Nikon gear ? Dpreview has countless threads that are just the same over and over again, often with idiotic discussions, Nikonians is rather snobby ( at least that's the feeling I get ) and has a terrible forum system, FM is nice but I don't think it has many members. You get the point. What do you think ?

Well, everyone is welcome. But including other brands in the equipment section is sure to be met with some criticizing. Most will be in good fun but someone will get out of hand. Someone always does.

Part of it is that the forum is what the users make of it. I don't think it has to do with the fact that it's all about Canon. But the people here seem to be friendlier.

Yes, but I think it isn't even comparable to dpreview. I know everyone is welcome, I'm not doubting that, what I'm saying is that if someone has an Olympus, even tough they're welcome, they can't ask lens questions in the lens forum, for example, not because someone would be rude to them but because no one knows about Olympus gear imo.

I believe Pekka and Company (Mods) have stated that, while any and all photographers are welcome to POTN, the gear forums will remain dedicated to Canon-specific gear.

If you stop and think about it, the gear forums here work because they're Canon gear. Basically, almost any Canon camera, lens or other accessory out there is in somebody's gear list. So there's somebody with the experience to answer a question about it. We have (well, with the exception of MDJAK, who'll be changing gear again in another couple of months anyhow) almost no users of Nikon, Olympus, or Pentax gear, so questions dealing with them are likely to sit around unanswered for ages. We have had topics posted about some other brand cameras in the gear forums, usually as comparisons of their feature sets and performance to Canon cameras. But there's nowhere near the interest in other brands of gear to warrant giving them a separate forum here.

I see Jon. My idea was that if people saw that potn had a forum for gear they own, they'd join as well, and the members that are already here would have a proper place to talk about their gear. But you if don't think it's a good idea, nevermind then :)

I don't see the need...I'm sure there are other forums dedicated to them specifically. I know of a forum that isn't dedicated to any one brand. I think being mainly Canon is what holds this forum together. Introduce too much and it'll be cluttered.

There are already other forums for this, FM, DGrin etc. It's nice to have at least one Only Canon Forum and one Only Nikon Forum
