OK, I've got a 5D tethered to my laptop and the EOS Utility stuff installed. I want to be able to shoot and have the most recent image pop up with histogram, etc., but I can't seem to figure it out ... I'm lucky if the image even appears in thumbnails in DPP. What's the secret? Different software?

I was having the same problem. Mine always pops up the smaller image but I would like it to immediately blow up.

I emailed canon support and this was their reply........

Unfortunately, images cannot be opened in a larger window automatically
in Digital Photo Professional when remote shooting with your EOS 30D.
However, if you go into the VIEW menu at the top, you can change the
thumbnail size to LARGE, causing the thumbnail images that you see to
appear larger. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

I have Lightroom and set it up with a 'watched' folder so whenever a tethered shot goes into this folder it automatically comes up in LR and I have LR in loupe mode where it views the full size image.

Thanks to both. I thought I remembered it working as desired at one point but I guess I'll look at using LR or PhotoMechanic, sigh.

I use the Canon utility program when tethered. When I want the picture to "pop Up" full size I use Lightroom as mentioned above - you have to "enable" watched folder - works like a champ for event photography

Or you could move to Digital Express or some other pro software

Thanks, Steve ... I like LightRoom for my conversions so I am very comfortable with it although I haven't used it this way before ... I think I will give it a go without screwing with the Canon display.

another nice thing about using it with LR is you can have it apply a preset develop setting as it imports it. This way all the upfront general work is done automatically. Good stuff.

Where is the "Watched Folder" at ? In lightroom preferences or what? Also is the load time on the laptop quick?

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Heck, trying different adjustments on the RAW images would even be a super asset ... this may well be significantly better than trying to use a hobbled DPP.

I use AcdSee when shooting tethered. It has the highlight new photos and preview which you can make full screen. Works great for focusing macro.

LR will work.
DPP works as well (with my 1D2 on a PowerBook G4). So either Canon support is wrong, or it's different for different camera's / OS's.

I start Eos Utility, connect the camera (FW), and take an image.
DPP starts up (set the prefs in Eos Utility), and display the image in the thumbnail view.

I select the image, click Cmd+right arrow, to go to the Edit image window.
Now, every image I shoot will appear in the edit image window at whatever scaling it's set on...

Yeah, I remember it working that way, but with my 5D last night it would not. I'll try again and with a 1D and see if it will work but I like the LR plan!

I've always wanted to do that.
But I cant.

1) need a good laptop
2) I always drool over the 5D. Its my end game camera (was saving for the next model)
3) Just found out I still owe 9 grand on my student loans
4) Took truck in for oil change and found out I need 800-1000 worth of work done.

All I have is drool left.

Oh, well, we can increase the drool level ... check out my Gear List! :-) I'd trade to be your age again even with the student loans and worn out truck! Is that you in the your avatar?

Tried it with a 20D today, and DPP works the same with that...
(images open in the "image edit" window at 100% if that's what you want)

Yes, I think mine used to do that but since I downloaded and installed the latest version on my new laptop it doesn't! What version are you running?

DPP 3.2.0; Eos Utility 2.2.0; Mac OS 10.4.11

I do have to fire of one shot, then click that once that opens in DPP, and go View > "Edit in edit image window" (shortcut: Cmd+ right arrow). Otherwise it'll stay in the "Main Window"

I gave it quick shot last night with the same bad result of not bringing the new images in ... there may be some other issue I am not seeing. I am still anxious to try the LightRoom thing since that is my RAW converter anyway.
