Alright I'm sorry but I couldn't find the answer using search. Maybe because I wasn't using the right words to look for it but I was wondering what I need to trigger the 580ex flash off the camera. I'm not sure if I need a remote and if I do what kind...Thanks for your help guys! :)

You have several options:
Canon E-TTL cord (retains full E-TTL functionality)
Wireless E-TTL via another 580ex or ST-E2 (retains full E-TTL functionality)
PC sync cable (no E-TTL)
Wireless triggers (no-ETTL), such as:
· Pocketwizards
· Elinchrom Skyportss
· Cactus tiggers
· Other "eBay" triggers

I use the Canon OC-E3 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/498744-REG/Canon_1950B001_OC_E3_Off_Camera_Shoe.html) but there are also wireless options or the Master/slave method with another 580ex.

Oops that's a better answer.

thanks for your help guys! I have the Canon OC-E3 already but I plan to put the flash on a tripod so I think I'll have to go wireless. I was also looking into getthing another 580ex so I can have two but is it worth it or should I just save up for studio lighting? Is there a benefit of having studio lighting vs using the 580ex as strobes...

the 580ex can't use the pc sync cord, but the 580ex II can. you can do the sync port mod to use a mini jack.
