Canon 550 EX. I realize that the canon flash is a better unit, but how much better. For the price difference it seems that the Sigma is a decent flash. Am I going to be missing out on a lot if I go with the Sigma instead of the Canon?

I can not compare the two since I only own the Sigma (2 of them). I have been pleased with it and it has all of the features I need.

I have two Sigmas and love them! I also used the Canon 420EX and 550EX flashes. You don't miss much except the ability to add an external pack, but this is easily overcome buy other adapters. The build quality of the Sigma is not as good as the Canon, but who cares as long as you take care of your equipment.
BTW, the Sigma has a modeling flash and can be used as a slave with or without ETTL which I don't think the Canon has.

Doesn't the modeling flash only work with the Pro bodies?

The modeling flash in those units will work with any camera body that has a depth of field preview button (because that is what activates it). I think that covers them all.

Anybody knows of any compatibility issue with standard film cameras (especially EOS 33)?
Thank You,

I own both, and I can tell that the differences seem to be quite minor, Canon is easier to operate, very intuitive, while he Sigma requires a bit more jumping around in menus. Canon also feels better built, but I suspect it only feels like it and they are pretty much the same.

I didn't realize the Canon 420EX had a modeling flash because it was not available given the rest of my gear at the time (D60 and lenses without DOF). In some ways then I would still say the modeling flash is not actually part of the flash if it was not always available like on the Sigma.

Interesting. The modeling flash feature is part of my 420EX when used with my D60. Are there lenses that do not work with the D60's Depth of Field Preview button?
