I have one too. I was just stating that Apple could release a box full of ****, and put Ipod on it and they would sell millions.

Its a sad sad time when you can make anything, give it a flash name and sell it in the thousands, even if it dosn't actualy do anything.

For the cost of the 60gig I-photo I could go and buy a new A95 with a 1gig CF card. Then not only could I show and share my photos on the screen, but get this! I could also take photos, and even get them printed out

You have to remember, not everyone is as serious about photography as we are. This Photo iPod looks like a cool way to SHARE photos with friends. I don't think it was designed as a card reader for photogs to use in the field. It's for storing photos you've already downloaded to your computer. It's just an expensive photo album--with it's own screen, that you can also connect to a tv (again, to share photos).

you can also do this with you A70!!!

Okay............this is my point.............if you're going to make an mp3 player with photo viewing capabilities........why not just go a few step further and offer a built-in card reader??...........who really goes around showing 20G worth of photos around?? Or how often do you really want to look at your photos?? Its just silly concept I think.............

I guess time will tell who goes around showing 20GB of photos! Why does it upset you so that Apple has decided to do this? My guess is that they did marketing research that indicates people want to buy such a device.

No, they did marketing research that showed they could sell anything to a certian market with lots of money, and that they could do it with out any regard for how moral it might be, or how valid a product it is.

Meh, Im just a staunch anti-comsumerist :)

I could rant about this sort of product development and marketing for hours.
Its not that I don't like gimmicks, its that I don't like very expensive gimmicks made out to be something you can't live with out.
If it only cost $50, a true reflection of its manufactoring and development cost + modest profit it wouldn't be a problem. Its the extra $400 you pay for the misleading marketing of a product you don't need that I have a problem with.

Did you read the product description Apple has on their web site? What is misleading about it? You are typing on a computer that cost you more than it did to make... And what do you mean by the morality of the product (relative to the photo ipod) and the validity of the product?

A staunch anti-consumerist?

What's the point of that? We live in a society that uses money as a symbol of your labor--i.e., we don't trade services of animal pelts. It's really a lot easier to live this way. Without it, you'd need to swap something at the grocery store instead of just buying your food!

But 1 good way to tell Apple what you think will be to not buy one.

Personally, I love my iPod. After reading the web page, I wouldn't consider the Photo version. But I really don't care if other people buy it. It's their money. If the product fits their needs (and a person's needs can be emotional as well as practical) and they can afford it, why shouldn't they get one?

I have something to say about this. The internal battery issue stinks. why can't they make a device that will use different batteries? Just like cameras or CD players? I have plenty of BP511A's to go around, and it certainly didn't bother me much to pay for them, even if they are a propietary battery.... at least I have a fresh battery to go in the unit wenever I need it... what good is it to have 80 hours of DVD quality video in your Archos Media Player, when you can only watch two hours at once because of the damn internal battery that dies in the middle of your flight back to London? imagine if you will, a MK II with an internal battery.... you just wasted your battery, and now you have to go home and wait for three hours with the thing connected to the wall so you can go out and shoot again!!! Absolute madness!! Am I alone here? And all those people that USE their Ipods frequently, what kind of performance do you get from your battery, now that you have recharged it 100 times? And what will happen once your battery fries completely? Use it as a door stop? To ALL manufactures out there, the technology is there under your desk, just give me a unit with 40 GB, WMP capable, MP3, Compact Flash slot, USB port, a decent software integration, a 3in screen (min) and the ability to CHANGE the d*a*m*n BATTERY, and I, sincerely, am all yours!

This Photo iPod looks like a cool way to SHARE photos with friends.

I'm not too sure how you are supposed to "share" photos other then looking at them on the 2 inch screen or plugging it into a telly.
Does it have some kind of wireless networking feature so you can transer from the ipod to some other device?

I thought 'sharing' meant 'exchanging' and this is not really sharing, its only showing.

The I-Pod is cool and therefore popular. The Photo I-Pod will be cool too and therefore also popular. Then again, "cool" doesn't necessarily have a direct relationship with features and functionality.

No offense to I-Pod fans but personally, I don't really get the whole I-Pod phenomenon. I mean it's an MP3 player. Big deal? My laptop has one. My pocket PC has one. My FlashTrax has one. Heck, even my mobile phone has an MP3 player. Why would I buy a dedicated MP3 player?

Having said that though, if I were to buy an MP3 player I probably would buy an I-Pod. I just have no personal need for one.

i would like to know why canon didn't include a mobile phone, mp3 player and video camera in the 1Ds Mk2.

what a wasted opportunity :D

Well, that does it. We definitely have to rename the "Share Photos" forum to "Show Photos".

RE Batteries: I would prefer to have removable, rechargable lithium batteries. I have using AAs or AAAs. I get about 5 hours on my iPod 40 (not the newest one). When I use it in my car--via transmitter over th car stereo--I plug it into an adapter. Same at work. When I travel, I just bring the charger.

RE iPod phenomenon: I think the issue is that with so much memory, it can hold all your music. I had a 128mb player--expanded with a card to 256mb. So I could hold 6 hours of music. But I had to pre-select which 6 hours I wanted. Now I have ALL my music, 5 books, about 1500 photos and a GB or 2 of day-job work backed up on it. I have 1100 songs on one playlist that just randomly selects a song to play. It's like having a radio station that always plays what I like!

RE Sharing: I guess if sharing means giving, then this isn't a product for you. Personally, when I share photos of my kids, my travels, etc. with people at work, I don't expect to give them copies--nor do I expect they expect to get them!

RE Card readers: There is a 3rd party card reader for the iPod. I think to build one in would make the pod too big (no longer pocket sized).

Correct. Also, you can charge $ 99 for this lovely add-on: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T7418LL/A

I think a lot of people are going to buy it ... it's COOL

I wouldn't spend the amount of money on it, but there are a lot of people who will. Unfortunately, it doesn't support RAW

Best regards,
Andy
