Hi everyone, just though I would let everyone know, I gave in am bought some new lens's today! well they are used, but practically new :)
Sigma 24-70 F/2.8 EX & Sigma 70-200 F/2.8 HSM APO
Took about 60 images tonight, so far soo good. I was pretty impressed with the optics of these sigma lens. the 70-200 I think is sharper than my canon 70-200 f4 through inital testing :) Hopefull we will get some sunlight soon and I will really be able to put the big zooms though its paces.
24-70 is hopefully gonna turn into my walk around lens, but that will come with time.
Here are a couple from tonight, and later tonight.

Umm... I don't like to be a party pooper, :( but there's a significant amount of purple fringing in that image. It's particularly noticeable bottom/centre and down the right hand side of the picture.
Which lens was that taken with?

Cadwell, I've looked over this image with a fine tooth comb this morning, I cant seem to see what your talking about?

Hey,if you still have the canon 70-200/4 then you would be doing lots of people a favour by comparing them! :D
These sort of questions pop up online constantly!
Make sure you do a well controlled test though-alot of poeple will be watching 8)
So far the best tests i've seen online definitely put the sigma at least a stop behind the canons in sharpness.(i.e the sigma has to be stopped down to f5.6 to equal the sharpness of the 70-200/4 used wide open.
I hope this doesn't sound like critisism though-the sigma is still way sharper than the better kit lenses and (imortantly) is easily sharp enough for alot of users

In the center of the image at the bottom there is a wire which runs in an arc onto the bottom of the insulator stack. The bottom edge of that wire has a distinct purple fringe. That's the most obvious example. You can also see them on the top of the chain link at the extreme top right of the image and to a lesser extent on the right hand edge of the strut which runs at a slant down the right hand side of the picture.

Just remember that purple fringe is a condition of the sensor in contrasty situations, not particularly a lens problem. You'd doubtless have gotten the same fringing with an L in that situation.

Purple fringe can be caused by the microlenses on the sensor, it can also be caused by the lens. In the example posted, as the purple fringes only occur round the edges of the image and not in the centre it's reasonable to assume that it may well be the lens in this case.
You are right of course in that L lenses can also show puprle fringing. The only lens I own which shows any (slight) sign of it is my 100-400L. Thankfully all my other lenses never exhibit it.

Thanks for the info guys, I do see the slight purple fringing on the bottom wire. I will try and do some more tests tonight and let eveyone know how it goes.

why did you buy the sigma 70-200 when you already had the L 70-200?

oops, didn't realise it was 2.8, that makes a decent enough difference.
Any idea which you prefer yet?
