manual focus + display off

I'm a little confused. When I set the distance manually and then turn the display off, my G5 reverts to autofocus. I'm almost, but not totally, sure that I have been able to do this before so can someone please tell me if it's my camera or my memory that's broken? :o

If that wasn't clear, I want to set the distance manually and then turn the LCD off before I take the shot. Can or can't? :shock:

I don't think you can turn the lcd off, it needs it for the mf.
