Hi I own a Canon Rebel XTi and a 30D, is there any way to take a picture and have it save on an external portable hard drive with the usb connection of the camera? I do a lot of nature photo, sunrise, sunset and instead of changing the cf card I would like to save directly on the external HD.

Thank you

Daniel:)

Not sure of a way on either of those bodies but a 40D with the WFT grip can have an external HD plug into it.

You could use a WiFi transmitter (WFT-E1 supports the 30D, IIRC; the "Eye-Fi" card with an SD-CF adapter will work on either) to send the files to a near-by laptop, but you won't be able to write directly to a portable stand-alone hard drive for any reasonable price (calling the $1000 list price on the WFT-E1 reasonable?). ISTR someone has a $1500 solution that will do this. I've posted on the Eye-Fi a couple of times here. It works, but you need to connect to a wireless workgroup; you can't set up an ad-hoc connection direct to the laptop.

Have you considered maybe an Epson P-3000 and just dumping your images onto there directly from your compact flash card?

I use a Digimate with 120GB harddrive that copies directly from CF or SD(built in battery) What I have are 2 x 2GB CF cards. So when 1 is filled up I will change the CF card and let former transfer to the HDD while continue shooting. That's more practical than say having the camera attached by a USB cable to a HDD (if that's possible) while out in the field. When I am ready to review and edit I just connect it directly to my laptop as an external HDD.
