Nice photo of "before the storm". The emphasis on the weeds in the foreground by flash detracts from the overall mood of the photo IMO.
If the attempt was to create a surreal landscape, then this photo is more on the mark.

rob -- good stuff! great idea!
i'd like to see a version where the flash wasn't mounted above the lens -- i think that if the light was coming from the side, it would be even more dramatic, and add even more depth.

i totally agree, and when i get my 10D and a 450/550ex, i'll have that capability. for now i'm stuck with this A80 :D

I agree that the weed distracts from the background which is the point of the scene.

but the weeds are dry and obviously need the rain that is approaching.

IMO you need those weeds if this picture is to stand out among the other 50 million shots of moody skies (mine included).
I like it as it is, and I agree with the flash position comment, although I didn't think of it until it was mentioned

here's the revised version. noise reduction with grain surgery, and i applied that nice velvia action to it.
