I just bought a 1D and i love it. I dont have nearly all the lenses i feel i need. That said, i'm trying to justify financing a 20D through best buys 0% interest plan.
My latest was to "buy it for meghan".

Don't do it.
Interest or no, you'll be making payment for a long time. At some point, you'll figure out that you really should have spent the money on glass. In the meantime, Meghan will have run off with a guy name Lizard Boy from a traveling carnival sideshow, and you'll be stuck with that darned camera payment.
Don't do it, Tim. Why ruin your future for 4 megapixels?

Timmy,
I feel your pain. I'm so tempted to get a 20D, and pass my dRebel onto my girlfriend. So so tempted. I visit the mall, and the 20D is there on BB's display. No case to keep me away from it. It's so tempting....
My only advice is don't go to BB. Don't hold it. Don't take any pictures with it.

All joking aside, which is what this mostly is (i really cant afford to buy another camera right now with another semester of school, x-mas, aniversery/bday for my g/f ugg).
But, i do feel the need for a second body and to be entirely frank; the 1D does not always give me the most flattering images.
I kind of consider it a truck, sometimes you just need a truck to get the work done. It's rough and tough, it can handle anything i throw at it and it's so so powerful.
On the other hand, it would be nice to have a sports car to take out on the weekends.
Something smaller, with nice big 8mp noise free images.
I think i may spring for a 20D sometime late next summer if i dont transfer to a 4 year university. For now, i need a W/A lens (17-40 anyone?)

Okay, all kidding aside....
If photography is going to be your life's work, then you probably can justify almost anyting you want. If this is just a pleasant diversion to get you through some awkward or uncertain stage of your life, save your money. You've been around long enough to know that lusting for photo equipment is a very transient emotion. It isn't long after you satisfy that lust that it starts all over again for something newer/better. You can't beat them. You can't even join them. The best you can ever do is to chase them, so why try.
You have a great camera already. Maybe it isn't perfect for everyday, but it's as close as you need to get at this stage of your life. There are so many other things you probably could use at your age (like an education, for example).
Note: this is based on some of the mistakes I made as a young man (plus a few I've made as a senior citizen).

For what he could sell the 20D for, and what he was going to pay for the 20D and the price of the MKII down to about $3900 or so, he's pretty darn close to taking it home.

Seriously though.........if you can't afford it, don't get it. The 1D is a very nice camera........if anything, buy a really fast glass for those low light stuff........50 f1.4, 35 f1.4 ;-)

You guys are awful. :wink: It is like asking a pack of wolves if it good and ethically sound to hunt sheep. Other than Belmondo, who might be a sheep in wolf's clothing, the advice on this thread will just increase your dilemma. :P Unless Meghan is into photography, don't do the "buy it for Meghan" deal. I've done that to/for my wife and so far I've got some pretty expensive gear (Sony video camera, Canon digicam, laptop computer, etc.) sitting around collecting dust while my wife spends time with her personally interesting hobbies.
If you are going to upgrade, upgrade for your sake and needs. It might actually be prudent to go with the MKII as RFM suggested than keeping both your 1D and have a 20D. I can understand your sports car analogy, but can you really afford it? Why not invest in sports car glass instead of another camera?
Just my humble thoughts.

I halfway agree - do it because it'll help you not under the guise of for someone else. As to selling the 1D and using the extra money the 20D would cost to get a 1DII, I'd have to say that in fast-moving situations two bodies are better than one . . . If you can use two bodies regularly and effectively, and they;'ll help you work better, then go for it.
That's not even considering that what made the 20D sound tempting (right?) was the 1 yr. 0% interest plan at Best Buy - and BB doesn't (except maybe the Beverly Hills branch) stock the 1DMk II! That's 125/mo for a year. Same money on a regular credit card (18%) and the last two payments would be almost all interest.

When I got the MKII I kept the 10D for the same reasons as you (a better sling it over the shoulder option, wife more able to pick it up etc etc) but to be honest it has hardly been turned on since getting the MKII (which I love to bits despite its size and weight). I would get the glass you want before upgrading the camera. The 1d will be worth much the same in a year when the 30D is out and the 20D is worth much much less. L glass, however, lasts for years.

If it's an excuse for a backup, then forget it. Considering you already have a better camera the the 20D, 10D or any of the other D series camera's. Either upgrade, or get another camera that won't break your bank but is a very capable camera. In reality, the 20D and 10D are too similiar for you do spend $700-$800 more then you have to for a backup camera.
Using that money, you can find some pretty fast glass + a 10D backup. Or sell it and as RFM said, get a MKII.

Why put racing tires on a Toyota? ;)
I hope you all realize this is all tongue-in-cheek. Firmly planted.
But, when someone comes online asking for advice, they will get all angles. Serious advice to Timmy: Master what you have now and then move on when you've perfected your technique.

Remember my previous 20D vs 1D MK II thread? Well, 1D MK II is ideal for me, but pocket says no; so I decided to go with a second 1D instead, until I make enough money from selling photos. At the mean time, I made sure all work I do won't require high megapixels, so 1D is capable of doing everything.
Also I get to save up more money for glasses.
Honestly speaking, leave 20D, if you wanna do it, go with 1D MK II.

Don't buy the 20D. You won't be happy with a 20D even now when there's a 1DMKII. Before you pay off the 20D, there will be a better camera at a cheaper price. And you will get stuck with your 20D.
Get the 1DMkII if you HAVE money. If you don't, save the money and get a better subsequent model.

Well I have a 20 D and I will say its the best investment I have made in a Camera. Like everyone else I would love to own a MKII but I didn'e settle for second best with the 20d. As far as size and feel, well I have owned NIkon Pros and Hasse;blad and the size is just fine and the feel is solid.
But like one guy said two bodies are better then 1. Everytime I shoot I have a situation where I wish I had my 28 to 75 on, and no time to change lenses. So I go for the 1D and the 20D.
Now In my opinion 6 megs will do fine for just about every situation you shoot but if you shoot birds and you can't get close enough, cropping in half still give you a 4 meg picture and a 13 x 19 can be made from that.
What ever you do you can't go wrong with the 1D.

Hi Timmy,
Glass is forever, Cameras are disposable. I must admit that its a hard choice. I got a D60 and then worked on my glass collection, when I had most things covered I upgraded to a 1Ds then went back to work on the lens collection.
Here's an idea, sell Meghan and buy the camera and lenses you want.
Anyone know what the black market price is for a kidney at the moment?
To be honest Timmy it would help if we knew what kit you had other than a finger and an eye... still think you need a brain in the mix but what do I know. What glass do you have already?
Best Regards

IMO, you should have kept your 300D that you bought from Best Buy and waited till the 20d was released. Once Best Buy starts to carry the 20d take your 300D and your service plan to get the camera swaped out with the 20d, and you only have to pay the difference.
That is what I did.
300d =1000
PSP =100
=1100
20d =1600
PSP =50
you only pay $550 for the 20d with a four year service plan.
Just my opinion...

1Ds / s + 299 =
300D
70-200 2.8 L
50 1.8
100 2.8 macro.
I knew there was something that was nagging about your kit, now I know what it is
1Ds / s +299=D+299
or what i think you meant
1Ds / s + 299d=300D
All the best

Thats one thing i'm scared of.
I went to add the sigma 20mm f/1.8 and i realized that i also had the 35mm f/2 (as much as i want it i dont know if i could ever justify the cost of the f/1.4 version)
Why do i need two fast wide angle lenses?
Why...why the heck not! THATS WHY!

"Maybe" is right. I'd actually be pretty damned amazed if I didn't own a Canon 500m f/4 by this time next year. The "maybe" part comes in when I think about the 600mm f/4, but there's a very big price difference between the two.
PLUS I still have the other 2 lenses on the list to get... So far...

One thing i dont often think about (because i lack any patients) is the fact that i'm young, and that i dont think we'll be seeing a new lens mount for quiet some time. That said...i have plenty of time to build up collection.

There are those among us (speaking personally) that believe a wider, faster, longer (pick one) lens will instantly improve our skills. We're out buying new equipment long before we've extracted maximum utilization of our last 'must have' purchase.
The most useful bit of knowledge we can instill in any relatively new user is that equipment is a small part of the equation; knowing what you can do with what you already have would be far more useful.

I also agree with that, and i just kind of thought of this going through my girlfriends photos. She uses cheap B&W film on an old AE-1 and two lenses (28mm & 50mm) and they rock (we're scanning them right now so you'll see them soon).
I'm still a beliver in that the better equipment you have the better luck and more flexibility you'll have with your photos.
That said, i'm gonna buy the fastest lenses i can afford from now on. Thats the one that has really grabbed me, f/2.8 or faster.
