Anybody know of a good article on how to crop and when to do it in the digital workflow??

Obviously, its best to have set up correctly in the first place, but my brain is not what it used to be after three kids and too many years.

What if the result of what I need to crop turns out to be disproportionate to the usual photo sizes? How do you compensate to maximize the least amount of pixels lost?

Thanks, guys...

I do it after I've saved the pic WITH layers in case I want to import a full layer in the future. This saves time trying to register the new & old layers. Then, flatten, crop, resize & sharpen in that order. Then I'll SAVE AS whatever.
If the pic is to be printed & isn't a standard pic format, I'll matte a big print or add a background black layer for a simple 4X6" print, so it'll look something like this:

I wish! No, there are several places within 6 miles of me where these guys meet weekly during the summer & I've been posting car pics from there. You can see more at top links on the site below if you'd like to.

If I crop, I crop immediately (caveat below) since I have no desire to waste RAM on parts I'm not going to use. It also makes for a more accurate histogram.

Alas, there are times when I've gone back to the full image to get a better crop for an 8x10 - I usually crop to 3:2 ratio, and since 8x10 is so different it often helps to get a different crop from the full image.

If you print at different sizes/ratios then it's probably better to crop as Frank does, right before output. I try not to print at different sizes.
