I've been a full time professional photographer for over 30 years & only about 5 years ago found a product that is the most amazing thing I have ever used. It is called ROR I for (residual oil remover). It seems that oil in the atmosphere is what makes lenses difficult to get perfectly clean. I use an old cotton diaper that has been washed a zillion times (very soft) & I double fold the diaper over the index finger and apply one drop of this liquid to the diaper - The Mfg recommends a tissue but, I feel safer with a diaper. Gently rub the lens surface all over & dry with another part of the diaper. The front & rear elements of your lens will visually seem to disappear - yes, it will be that clean. A 1oz dropper bottle cost me around $5. at a local camera store.

The Company Address is:

V-Vax Products
1507 North Elston
Chicago, IL 60622

Yeah! I discovered ROR around 9 years ago. Before that I had been using Kodak lens cleaner and paper for about 20 years and things never seemed to get really clean. With ROR you just give a lens a quick wipe and it's perfect.

Now just a suggestion, has anyone tried to use the cleaner that you use to clean contact lenses ??? Will they damage the glass elements ? Its cheap and readily available

I wouldn't trust it. They put all kinds of additives in it to lubricate the eye, etc..

As an additional note

I did detailing for about 4 years on showcars, exotics etc etc you guys might want to try using microfibre towels, they are slightly expensive at 7-8 for a 1' square towel but they dont scratch anything.

Really good stuff for cleaning the camera, lcd, lens etc etc.

Cheers.

Would pec pads work with it?

Do you where would one find such a towel? Some folks around here have old cotton diapers and such that they use, but I don't have anything like that. And frankly I don't trust my normal dishtowels/washclothes.

I'm a lens pen fan..

They do a good job of getting oil off.. You have to change them after a few months of use because the cleaning tip does start accumulating the residual oil.. but for about 7 bucks each, they that expensive compared to other lens cleaning equipment..

I always carry two in my camera bag..... I just use the Nikon brand.. but there are others.. Kodak makes them as well as several other jobbers.. You can pick them up in any large camera store, or off the net from places like Adorama...

http://www.adorama.com/NKLP.html

But.... It sounds like ROR is worth a try...

There are a couple places for microfiber towels.

If you are in Canada
http://www.eshine.ca/
These guys are very very reliable, exteremly fast shipping in Canada.

States,
http://www.premiumautocare.com/
These guys are best in the USA

BTW, I now officialy hate Henry's. If you look young, they think you can't afford anything, so they dont give you any service. Too bad I had about $1500 in my pocket and went to another camera store and spent it all there.

I can't believe they recommend tissue. Regular tissue from a roll or box will leave tiny scratches.

If you want to find a scratch free cloth, try it on an old CD (AOL CD do have uses ;) ) or even better a cheap CDR. Just rub it a few times and see if scratches the surface.

I think they're referring to lens cleaning tissues---not bathroom tissues.

Yah, I know what you mean... When I was shopping around to replace my stolen equipment I asked them for the BEST "pro price" for a bunch of gear. They replied "you need to give us you pro registration number..." I then replied that I'm not a pro but am planning on spending a fair chunck of change. Their quote was almost $700 more explensive than the one from the other store. And that's on about $6,000 Canadian! What a difference! :?

Such is life...

That's actually a 1 oz bottle. I know it says 10 oz in a couple places, but it also says 1 oz, and if you look at the picture, the bottle clearly says "Contents 1 oz."

Ah yes. I was wondering how a 10 oz bottle could be cheaper than the 2 oz bottles in the states. Makes sense. And Henry's has free shipping right now!
PR, I've dealt with Henry's over the phone a few times in the last month, and I too was less than impressed with their service.

I mean, they are reliable, they are the biggest in Southern Ontario. I literally had to wait 30 minutes, going from one salesman to another that kept repeating "I will be with you in a moment" until I got to one and said, "sorry we are about to close, I will be around tomorrow".

Mind you, none of these guys were really doing anything.

Funny thing is, the only two guys doing anything were pushing some dig rebel on some guy who didn't know his hand from his foot when it came to photography and a couple looking for a "cheap digicam" as they called it. I was keeping myself amused by listening all the crap the guys were saying to sell, while I was brushed off trying to buy some L glass. Not that I am any more important, but there were 6 guys on the floor doing nothing while there was a customer willing to make a pretty big buy.

Best part, the two that were unsure did not buy, I was there to spend all my money and I ended up walking out.

Yeah, got my ROR solution today.
Funny, it says on the bottle:
"DO NOT USE WITH MICRO FIBRE CLOTHS"

I just tried a couple drops on a soft cloth to clean my monitor, and it worked wonderfully!
This monitor is a flatscreen CRT, and it's the hardest SOB to clean. No matter what you do it leaves streaks.
Now, once I can get my hands on some pec pads, I can clean my lenses.
BTW, I assume this ROR would not be recommended to clean the mirror or sensor?

I am not sure about using it on the sensor, but you never ever want to touch your mirror with anything but clean air. The mirror is silvered on the front and you could scratch the coating quite easy.

I'm glad you said it says not to use with micro fiber cloth. I bought two bottles from B&H and both have a label on the bottem half of the instructions and where it says not to do this. I stuck the bottle up to a light so I could read through the lable and saw it in the instructions. Why anyone would hide the instructions with important information like that is beyound me.

It's a good thing I use lens cleaning tissue to actually clean my lenses though. Which is what I used when I tried some ROR on 3 lenses and my polizer filters. It does do a great job and though they have been clean before, they just look cleaner than when I used the other lens cleaner.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, it sounds like I need to order me some of this miracle tonic. I've been needing a lens solution anyway.

TimWright and V-Vax certainly have gotten their money's worth out of their one post
