Try some bouncing. You can create some pretty cool shadow effects with a bounced flash.

LOL this post put a smile on my face. Almost as funny as my 20D thread. Do some tricks with it like Flip said:
pull your flash out of the hotshoe, carefully
grab it firmly in your right hand
lay down your camera
gently... throw your flash at the wall
watch it bounce
Repeat :)
Seriously, learn about bouncing your flash off of the ceiling and stuff to create and eliminate better lighting and shadow effects.

And learn to use it anytime you're shooting people or objects in bright sunlight. It'll soften or eliminate some shadows.
I turn mine to the side and bounce it off a silver / gold flex reflector and it gives some nice effects when shooting the kids. Simple setup and works well.

Otherwise go get the Lumiquest pocket bouncer kit with the 80/20 bouncer and inserts. It's about $35 and works excellent!
