View Full Version : Little boy too blue?

I took this picture of my son in an attempt to move from snapshots to portraits and get off the green box. I've been staring at it for some time now and can't determine if it is too blue or not (or if I have done ok with lighting, setup, etc!!). Not sure the border is working either. CC welcome and most appreciated.

Border is a personal artistic choice.

There is definately a blue cast to his face from the reflection of his sweater. You can see it most clearly under his chin.

The white balance looks ok, but yes there is some blue on the boys face from the sweater reflection, you could PP that out im sure. I think that kids look good in bright colours and this photo works quite well.
What i don't like at all is the background, what is that? carpet? whatever it is it would be better if it was out of focus.

The shirt is very sharp! Make sure you set your focus point on his eyes. A bit of fill flash on his face would also work well. Are you using carpeting for your backdrop? I would have him stand a couple feet from it to blur it up a bit, looks like he is standing right next to it.

The face overall seems very soft and out of focus to me.

Eyes are key to focus on the rest will follow but eyes are #1, just my opinion

I would say he is on the "blueish" side. Here I adjusted the WB by sampling the white of his eye. Plus I adjusted the levels a bit.

Nobody has mentioned the red eye. The ugly background is much too close behind him -- the further away the better and this case really far away would be better. Also, his arms are chopped off at the elbows. He should be doing something with his arms other than hanging them limply.

Awesome. Thanks for all the critique. Yes, the background is ugly (my blanket I use to keep warm!), I have nothing else. Mostly I was just trying to cover up the wall. I'll take all of this advise into consideration the next time I go for it. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to help out.
