I know this is asking a lot but is there any way of achieveing this kind of focus on my SD850 or am i just going to have to wait until i get a dslr

What do you mean 'this kind of focus'?
If you mean a low depth of field, you'll probably have to get a dSLR, unless you can separate the car from the background to a greater extent. Otherwise, you can always use Photoshop to add some selective blurring to the background. It can work well, if done properly.

yeah thats what i meant the depth of field, i do use photoshop at the moment to give that effect but it never quite looks the same

Stand back, zoom in and use your lowest aperture.

The problem is his camera isn't ideal when it comes to controls. He can certainly zoom in, but selecting the aperture is another story.

Maybe on Portrait setting would be the closest result . . .?

Lack of control is one of my biggest gripes with compacts. Even with the ones that do have aperture control, getting shalow DOF is not always easy.
