Hi, heading out bowling this afternoon and my daughter asked me to take her picture. Any tips?

I have the xti and 50 and 85 f/1.8 and kit lens. I've been struggling in the hockey arena all winter, so is it the same sort of process?

-shoot grey card
-go to custom white balance
-shoot 320 shutter speed and high ISO

would that be the correct recipe?

Thanks
b

I thought you meant bowling tips. :) I don't have any. I have terrible tennis elbow. ;)

But yes, white balance is the key. I just took some shots before Christmas of my 2 sons. Flash is not recommended. It distracts the others.

bowling American, or the effete English style? :D
Walk down the gutters & shoot back at the bowler.

Bowling is a terrible sport to photograph, for in most bowling alleys, your best vantage point is getting the back of the bowler.

If you can arrange to get on an end lane that has a walkway down the side, you could then get some halfway decent shots.

The lighting in a bowling alley is horrible. Now, if you get to shoot when ESPN has the whole place lit up, you can get some very nice shots.

hee, hee,

Ok I am gonna try with the 85mm and get towards the ends where I can walk and shoot back. Don't imagine my shots will compare to these, but we will see...lol

I guess there is no hope for you, Bowling (Bowls), Cricket and Croquet are all refined aesthetic games that rely on tactics, strategy and intellect, you stick to smashing down the pins :lol:

To keep OT I would imagine that English Bowls would be much easier to photograph than the 10 Pin variety.
