Its not the greatest but it will do a decent job. I owned it and took some good pictures with it. It is soft at its longest. Good shutter speeds and at least a monopod go a long way towards sharp pictures (that goes for all long lens though).

BTW: B&H has much better price on this:

Yea, I figured. Wish it had IS. What about on shorter shots? Not to soft huh?

I have this lens. I have upgraded now, but I had no problems with the lens, I just wanted something higher quality. As people have said, it is softer at higher magnifications, but it does take good pictures, and soft does not mean really blurry, its just not 'as' sharp at 300 as it is at 200.

I would have no reservations recommending it as a first zoom.
You can probably pick up a used bargain too, in fact I could sell you mine if you were in UK :-)

www.focuscamera.com has B&H beat by $10. Check shipping to see which is actually cheaper.

I have the lens you're wanting to buy. At it's longest zoom, the effective 460mm length is hard to keep steady in your hands. I am now looking to get a 35-135mm to have something much more manageable for everyday shooting, but the 75-300 is good.

Canon does make a 75-300mm IS for around $400

IS will not make this consumer grade lens any sharper. In my opinion you would be wasting your money spending the extra $210 for IS. Use a higher shutter speed and a tripod and you will do just fine. Save your $210 to put toward a Canon 70-200 later.

The IS and non-IS versions are pretty much identical optically.
The advantage of the IS _besides the obvious_ is that you can stop the lens down to f8-f11 for quite good image quality and the IS will take care of the inevitable low shutter speeds :)

Overall these lenses feel cheap and focus slowly but they are 'good enough' for most people. The characteristic very strong out of focus blur actually works in it's favour i think.
Believe me there are some crap cheap telezooms out there  i've used most. This model is abit of a budget bargain

Here are some pics i took with several of mine

I would agree with most of what's been said.
This is a good budget lens and you will take some nice shots with it, even at 300.
My biggest bugbear with this lens was the annoying lens creep.

I've found that I get a lot of fringing when using this lens at 300 mm on a 20D at high ISO (1600 - 3200).

I only have two other lenses, the 18 - 55 that comes with the camera and a 28 - 135 IS, neither show any fringing for similar shots, so I'm guessing it's the lens.

yep,it's the lens doing that.
It's not a problem though-it doesn't show in normal pics

Shooting in darker areas wont be as sharp I assume.

I now have the first results of a 75-300 verses 100-300 comaprison online here.

The 100-300 has much better optics than the 75-300 types...but of course the L zoom is another notch better again :D

You don't know what you are missing, If you just add 150 more, you can get a 70-200/F4L, this is a REAL lens!!!

I had this 75-300IS, however after I tried 70-200, wow, I just said myself a big WOW. Then I dumped the 75-300IS to get a 70-200/4L.

Never looked back.

Wow! Those test shots are great, it make the choice between 75-300 and 100-300 a pretty easy choice!

I don't suppose you have any test shots that are similar things with the different lenses do you? I'd love to see the difference between the 100-300 and the 70-200.

I will be adding a 75-300 IS lens to the test soon and i'd LOVE to get hold of a 70-200/4 L :D :D :D :D to compare!!

I'll be seriously asking around locally in the next few weeks for anyone who has this lens
