Unless that is the look you are going for, I wouldn't shoot that color of gel at your subject.

Are you trying to "gel" the subject or backround?

i think you need to choose a color that compliments the skin tone, as it appears; magenta/purple isnt it.

Do you want color on the Background or on the subject and skin tones?
I saw many shots where you can place certain colors on the subject for hair for example without affecting the skin, is that what you look for?

I don't think WB matters when hitting your subject with a colored gel like that.

i'm no expert by any means, however in this shot it looks like the background was hit by a gel, but the subject may have been lit by a standard strobe and then in post they could have altered the color balance towards the blue end to match. since it looks like mainly only the highlights were affected in her face

I doubt you'll get much help on this unless you tell us what you are trying to accomplish. The first shot looks pretty awful with the gel shot at the subject like that in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the blue one, but it doesn't look terrible.
Did you take the second shot? Is this the look you are looking for? I have no idea what you are asking for.
Maybe post a link to photos that look like what you are trying to achieve and people may be able to help you.
