I've been looking at a couple 28-105s and was just wondering, if ya had to choose, which one would ya go with? I want the 28mm for wide angle group shots and the rest of the range for close action and general photos. Thanks for any thoughts you all can provide.......PhotoDude25

Have you checked www.photodo.com ? Some of Sigma's EX series lenses are great and some of Sigma's lenses are not so great.

Thanks Scott, hmmm, neither lens seems to garner glowing review ratings, although the Canon seems to fare better in their tests than the Sigma. I better keep looking. Maybe I should take a peek at that Tamron 28-75mm everyone's been posting about.........PhotoDude25

These Guys have a fairly comprehensive amount of camera equipment reviews, including lenses. You might want to have a look here.

Their reviews are written by people that actually own the items being reviewed, so take an average.

Definitely get the canon!
It has a very good reputation but i've never heard anyone praise a sigma 28-105 (any version)
The canon model you must get is the 28-105/3.5-4.5 that sells for about us$220+ (and can be reliably bought 2nd hand for less)
Canon also make a cheaper 28-105/4-5.6 that is no better than the sigma

Why not go for the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, it's a KILLER lens and cheap.

28mm is not really wide angle on a D30, as it's the equivalent of a 45mm lens on a film (35mm) camera. If you want a 28mm equivalent, you need to be looking at lenses that start at 17/18mm.

Bruce, I'm in the northwest corner, a couple hours west of Chicago. Where is Whiteheath? Not familiar with that town.

Not sure geographically where in Illinois Whiteheath is, but I have a friend/fellow photog that lives there. Just curious more than anything.
