I am kind of new to all this so please help me. I am thinking of getting a Sigma EF-500 DG flash. Would I go wrong buy getting that flash or should I spend $100 more and get the canon flash? Also will either of these flash allow me to take much better lit pictures indoors?

Either will get you better pics indoors, especially if you bounce the flash. I can't comment on the Sigma as I have never had or used one. I do have 2 430ex's and love them.

I am thinking of the sigma only to save $100.

I hear you, do a search on here putting in the make and model. See what comes back. I really don't know. I have read some about it and some have had some problems and others have loved theirs. I know its got some limitations, what they are I don't know. Just going from what I have skimmed over from other posts. Good luck.

I had a Sigma EF-500 DG Super for a couple months. Sold it after a wedding to get the Canon 580EX, mostly so I could add the CP-E3 to improve my recycle times (didn't want to splash out for an expensive Quantum Turbo). 6 seconds is a little on the slow side for me. Had I stayed a hobbyist, I'd probably still have the Sigma. Great value unit. Build, specifically at the shoe, isn't very confidence-inspiring though.

Have had a Sigma for about seven months and have found it to be great...a great value for the buck

which canon speedlight? if its the 430, i'd get the sigma hands down. it beats the 430 in options and power. If its between the 580 then that would be a different story. If the extra 2-3 stops of power is worth the $100 and you have money laying around to spend, get the 580.

What does the Canon 430ex do that the sigma EF 500 DG can not do? Why the $100 price diff?

The 580EX II is about one stop more power than the 430EX. The Sigma is in-between.

I guess after all my research I will get the 430ex. Seems like a better flash. I like the fact that there are more controls via the LCD display.
