Is anybody out there having the same problem that I'm having with Win2000 (SP3) and it NOT recognizing that my digicam has been attached?
The USB connection is working just fine, but the OS refuses to acknowledge when my A40 is attached--I have to manually start my digicam software (in this case, Downloader from Breeze Systems)...
After considerable searching (MS support, Google Groups, etc.) it seems quite obvious that this is a bug... I've tried a workaround or two, but no success...
Any hacks out there with a new approach?
Your input is greatly appreciated... :)

this appears to be a universal sp3 bug
I have seen this on multiple machines with differnt devices(cameras and scanners)
check out thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4638
I hope someone at microsoft is working on this !

Thanks for the reply... I thought it was just me...
For my recent searches and observations through the Microsoft Knowledge Base, no one at Microsoft appears to have taken any action on this... :(
Bleahhh....

Have you considered using a seperate card reader for uploading your pictures? If you don't already have one [a lot of newer printers have card readers built in] card readers are not that expensive.

One other thing. I've used Windows 2000 at work for a couple of years. I now use Windows XP home edition at home and my pc at work is a triple-boot (I can start up with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Pro - this is for software support). I do prefere XP over 2K. You might consider upgrading your OS.

I just recently migrated to Win2000 from Win98/SE... I figured Win2000 would be stable now, after three Service Packs... Wrong... Bleahh...
Yeah, I considered the card reader path, but I thought plugging in the USB cable would be a lot easier, then this problem crops up...
I didn't have this problem with Win98/SE, but that OS would hang or crash over time and required a fresh install to flush things out...

Can you undo SP3? I've been stable with W2K and SP2 for quite a while now.

You CAN undo SP3 - there is an uninstall exe buried in the WINNT folder.
What folks did not mention is - though the "Event on Deviceā fails to list any applications - all 'aware' applications are still usable and can still access the camera. For example, you just have to manually bring up Zoombrowser. This seems to be a very minor inconvenience

Like I said in my first post, you CAN start the program manually, but the fact that the automatic feature doesn't work bugs me... I guess that makes me anal, eh?? :P
Yeah, I COULD uninstall SP3, but I'm afraid of what other hidden problem that would unleash... Can't win, I supppose...

I have the same problem with W2000 when upgraded from SP2 to SP3. I also did a clean install of 2000 on a separate hard drive and installed SP3 and had no problems with D30Remote, Downloader, and several other programs--the registered event dialog box brought up all available programs. On the system that was upgraded I went to Control Panel/Scanners and Cameras/D30/Properties (with camera connected) and unchecked all events. I saved the settings and rebooted. After some experimenting I found that if only one program was sellected in the control panel applet that program would start automatically when the camera was turned on. Selecting more than one program would cause the problem. This might help if you only use one program for camera connection.

I read about a similar workaround from a Google Groups posting and tried it, but it didn't work... I've just gotta be patient and wait for SP4 or similar... Or move to XP (Yikes!!)...
Thanks for your help though... :)

When migrating the ZoomBrowser/PhotoRecord software to Win2000 SP3, I had the problem that when plugging the camera into the USB, its presence was noted and a 'choice' dialog box displayed, but the dialog box did not indicate any applications to select for receiving the images.
Looking at the Control Panel/Scanners and Cameras applet showed my S20 camera, and looking at properties/events tab showed all of my photo applications listed and selected: ZoomBrowser, PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop, etc.
I find that if I deselect all but one of the 'event' applications, the remaining application will automatically activate when the camera is connected to the usb port.
Sounds like a Microsoft Win2000 SP3 bug to me, but if you can live with always going to the same application when you connect the camera to usb, this isn't too bad a workaround. Of course you can also just start the desired application and control downloading from there.

Arrrrgh! - I'm not the only one with this problem. I found this thread surfing for an answer. I have a G2 and experience the exact same problem with SP3. I even uninstalled all my Canon software & reloaded everything, but to no avail. As soon as I went into my remove software screen and dumped SP3, my menu screen was no longer blank. I did a clean Win2K install on a different machine along with all the updates, patches etc. including SP3 and have the same problem. This time I tried it with an A-100. Same results. I have a new ZR50MC DVC but have not got far enough to see if SP3 barfs on this one too. Anyone found a solution yet???

On the other hand I've used the G2 USB connector with Win2000 for a year with no problems. It brings up Breeze Downloader when I plug in and switch on the camera. My Win2000 must be about a year and a half old, don't know what SP.
But I do have problems with a USB card reader. I keep it permanently plugged in, but it sulks if I take a card out of the reader, and won't recognise it thereafter unless I reboot.
This sounds a bit different from other card reader problems that people have mentioned on http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5788#26143

I sent a request to MS tech support to see if they could come up with an answer. I won't hold my breath for an intelligent reply, though. I had memory addressing problems with Picture It! Platinum and the fine folks at Microsoft tech support were dismally useless for help. I knew more about the innards and workings of a computer than they did. I finally scrapped their useless program. I'll post again when I hear back from them. For those who don't know how to get rid of SP3, go into control panel / add/remove programs and simply uninstall SP3. Thats what I did and it worked fine - no glitches. SP4 is in the works, but who knows when......

I sent a request to MS tech a couple of months back when I first encountered the problem... Never got a response...
I guess my request disappeared the the software Black Hole known as MS Support... :(

Hmmmmph! I sent a support request to Microsoft and got a reply back after some useless answers they gave me, totally unrelated to the problem. Here is their way of handling it: I'll cut & paste the reply:
Hello Bob,
Thanks for the information, and the Product ID. Since your PID contains the letters "OEM", it means that Windows 2000 came pre-installed on your computer via an Original Equipment Manufacturer, such as Dell, HP, or perhaps a smaller retailer. In such cases, the OEM agrees to provide you support for Windows, and in most cases you will qualify for free support, at least for some initial timeframe.
We are happy to help you as well, however there would be a cost for our support. In this case, I'd strongly recommend contacting your computer manufacturer, as they likely have services to offer you. If they are unable to support you, or if you'd like to continue with us, feel free to call 1-800-668-7975 and we'll create a pay-for-support incident.
However, before contacting your OEM, your best bet might be to uninstall SP3 if you've chosen the installation option that lets you uninstall it later. (You can choose to archive during the install of a service pack, thus allowing you to uninstall it later.) If the problem is specific to SP3, then uninstalling it should do the trick for you.
In addition, it is important to note that hardware manufacturers often have to update their drivers, and/or software when service packs are released. This is quite common, and thus I suspect Canon may be in the works with an update of some sort. In most cases they'll work with our developers to ensure that their applications and hardware work smoothly as service packs are released.
Thanks again,
Rob Toeppner

All I can say about that is "Typical Microsoft - skirt around the issue without helping the customers. After all, they have our money already and they want more to identify a problem with their software.
Can you say "Linux"?
Grumble grumble..... I'm not about to pay them for that. I tried. Anyone else got some ideas?

Pretty frustrating, I know, but also very typical...
Like I said before, we're just gonna have to live with it until SP4 or make the transition to XP (and its unknown gremlins)...
