I'm curious as to how much memory I'd need to record about a 10 minute movie
onto a Canon S5 IS camera memory card?...

I'm thinking of buying this camera for mostly photos, but also an occasional movie.
The advantage this camera has over a camcorder is that it does both.

Yes, I guess some camcorders also do both, but the advantage here for me is that
I don't have to deal with the tape in the camcorder. I'd really prefer to do photo and movie, then just download it all into my memory card reader. Thats how I look at it!..

Any suggestions?..

thanks

At 640x480x30 fps, it's about 9 min/GB. So a 2 GB card will do for one, if you don't mix a lot of still photos in with it.

Was it something like: 1 hour movie takes 4 GB, and 1 hour is the maximum time limit with S5. ... with one go.

I also bought the S5 because i like to shoot short videos of my 1,5 year old son growing. I filmed some with a video camera but it was too much trouble with capturing the material to PC and making the DVD out of it.
S5 has good enough video quality for this case.

EDIT:

I said wrong there, the maximum one shot video size is 4GB, OR one hour. Meaning: the video stops when it hits the 4GB limit, or when it hits the 1 hour limit.
With Jon's counting: 9 min=1GB, you can shoot 36 mins on 4GB. :D

2GB will do just fine!

But to be sure, I would buy 4..
