View Full Version : It seems Canon's supply chain is creaking again...

At least here in the UK it is.
I phoned my supplier today to ask "where's my 580EX?". It seems they got their first shipment of 10 through yesterday (they have hundreds on back order). I was number 18 on the list so no flash for me this time. Oh, and they have "no idea" when Canon are going to ship some more.
I got chatting to the guy and he tells me that they still have "over 200" 20Ds on back order.
The good news is that they have 1D MarkIIs in stock (and have reduced the price) so they may have caught up on that one ( temptation  )
It seems that Canon UK consistently underestimate demand for their new products and are unable to even come close to supplying enough to their resellers. Pretty poor.

Oh jees, I hope I'm not number 199 on that back order. Sounds like the same company that very politely informed me yesterday that they had no idea when they were getting their next batch of 20Ds from Canon UK. Mine has been on order for nearly a month and I'm off on hols next week grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
However, no gain without pain .... as we Calvanists believe ...

i went online last friday looking to buy a 20D and it was delivered on Monday.
I got it from pixmania.co.uk and it came from France with french manuals :( but the waranty is good in the uk (I called canon to make sure) and I only paid £1016 including postage.

a quick cross-cultural question: When you "islanders" refer to things with shortened words--like hols for holidays--does everyone use the same "nick-word?" Is there a standard set of nick-words or do you all just make them up as needed? :)

Is there a standard set of nick-words
 Of course not. That would be *way* too simple :P

that's right.
If billhercus was a real gentleman he would have said "I'm off on ME hols next week".

Maybe. But you really have to expect that on a brand new product. Especially since it is a flash unit with a considerable price. They really would not want to get stuck with a bunch of unsold stock.

maybe, but that doesn't explain why thousands of people have put deposits down for the 20D and no one in the uk has any.
If you call shops they dont really have any idea when they will be delivered or even how many will be delivered.

Find the office of Canon UK, march right in, find the big guy, walk into his office, put your feet up on his desk, and then ask him.

or get a 10D for half the price.
I'm seriously thinking of sending my 20D back, I have a few days to make up my mind.

Don't! The 20D is a vastly superior product. I speak as an ex-10D owner.

Not sure that it is the local Canon branches that does this. In early september when I was in my local photoshop in Denmark a Canon rep was there at the same time. We talked a little about the 20D and he said that Canon DK would not get all the 20D's they could sell so some shops would not get all their orders filled.

Us "islanders" actually invented the language remember - and still to this day we allow our colonial cousins to use it freely!!
Evilenglishman - you got a good deal but when I ordered my G3 from 'that same French lot' they deducted the money immediately (no camera) and I then waited 1 month to get my money back. The two changes in and out of euros set me back an unrefundable 12 quid or so. (For the colonials, quid = one pound sterling)
My deal has got 9 months interest free .. which means I can drip feed from my account w/o the boss knowing.
(For the colonials w/o = without)

they must have changed their set up as I had the camera 2 days before they even took the money and it was for the right amount.
I have no colmplaints about them at all - other that it isn't clear (without a fair bit of digging) that the stuff comes from France - they kind of hide the info.
As for the 20D being superior.
I upgraded from a D60 and I can honestly say from what I've seen so far that my old D60 took far superior shots than the 20D and I do regret selling my old camera.
Yes the 20D has a nice buffer etc but the images I took with the D60 +17-40 are perfect and don't need any sharpening done to them, that doesn't seem to be the case with the 20D :(

After the Boston Tea Party--well, WE call it a party; you might think on it differently--I'm not sure "allow" is really relevant. But thanks for doing the ground work on the language. We, of course, cleaned up the "islander" preference for the letter "u"--sticking it in words like COLOR and BEHAVIOR of all places!--but you gave us a good head start on perfecting it. :) :)

If it was a one off, Bob, I'd agree with you. It isn't. It happened with the D60, it happened with the 10D, the 20D, it happened to me with the 420EX and again with the 70-200mm f/4. Then there was the nonsense with the 1D MkII. (BTW, the 420EX and the 70-200mm were not new products at the time).
I am afraid incompetence seems to be the only plausible explanation.
