Manville = Manchester + Rockville (I didn't make this up!)
Hall West Hartford

I underexposed these like crazy, shot mostly at 1/1250sec @ 1600 ISO. Since I shot at such an ISO and had to bump up the exposure in post processing, you'll notice the noise levels are through the roof on these. (I don't have Noise Ninja either)

Rest are here: http://libanophotos.com/hockey/2008.03.06/

I didn't capture any goals in progress, this sport is HARD to shoot!!!

LOL :) Man some of those high school kids are big!

Shots look good given the settings! I'm posting a game soon that I shot today at 1600, but only 1/400ss. Perhapas next game I'll go a bit higher on SS.

Cheers!

Chris

A lot of the "grain" may actually be caused by the glass you were shooting through. That happens at a couple of our local rinks - the glass gives a grainy, speckled effect. The farther away the subject is, the worse it gets.

Thanks Christian!!

Brikwall, are you saying the grain might not be my fault? I can't use excuses to get off easy!!! The team we went to see won and they're in the semi finals for the state tourney this Thursday night at Yale. And from I hear it's "a nice rink".... how bout the light!?!!

Thanks for looking!

I'm saying it's possible, if you were shooting through glass, and depending on what kind of glass is installed.

My son's home rink was just rebuilt. The lighting is decent and the glass is brand new. However, when I shoot through the glass, I find that distant subjects/objects look grainy, and cropping in on the photo creates a harsh, haloed grain effect that's much worse than the lighting and a high ISO can normally account for. I've spoken to a couple of the newspaper photogs and freelancers: they've noticed the same thing and also attribute it to the type or brand of glass. Your pictures look strikingly similar to mine, which is why I'm wondering if it's also the glass in your case.

The one thing I've noticed, though, is that if I can fill the frame with the subject, the effect becomes negligible (to the point where normal PS noise reduction or Noise Ninja easily handles it). It's only when I crop in (ie: shooting cross-rink or from mid-ice to net) that the "speckles" become a problem.

#7 - puck is at #25 right foot, mid-skate.

Cool action! Noise ninja is great.

I suggest a tighter crop on 2,3,4 . Lights, ceiling and the scoreboard are necessary for the shot. IMO, unless you want to show the final score.
