Another booze test. All are 100% Crops. I really don't see much difference.

I can't tell much about the test shots, but White Label is my brand.....

Interesting.... The Tamron has more saturation, but less consistency from 4.5-8 and much less sharp at 4.5. The Canon is very consistent in color from 4.5-8 and seems almost as sharp at 4.5 as it is at 8. I do have to give the sharpness edge to the Tamron at f/8 though, over the canon.

Yes, that's really weird how the Tamron colors look so much different going to f/4.5 to f/8. That may be why it appears to be so much sharper at f/8, because of the higher contrast.

From all the raving going on about the Tamron 28-75mm I was thinking it was going to blow away the 28-135mm, but now I'm not so sure.

Oviv, thanks for sharing all these tests.

It looks as though the Canon focused midway back on the fruit while the Tamron focused on the near edge. The Canon seems to be very sharp at the leaves. Looks like a back focusing problem with this particular Canon lens.

We are the same person. :)

Good choice.

Actually, with the Scotch images, at f/4.5, the lenses are very close, though I'd give a very slight edge to the Canon. That trend changes at f/8, with the advantage a bit more pronounced in favor of the Tamron.

With the fruit images, it does seem that the Canon has caught focus on the branches in a couple of those images. Its hard to know where the actual focus point was set as these are presumably crops.

Good tests.

It really isn't that good of a comparison for a couple of reasons. First off, like others have said, it looks like the Canon focused back further behind the fruit. And secondly, the Canon was also zoomed in closer than the Tamron. That slight increase in zoom can cause things to appear better than they really are.

It's kind of like auditioning loudspeakers for your home stereo. If the sales person is trying to push a certain speaker brand or model, he will attempt to play that pair at a slightly higher volume level to try and trick you into thinking they sound better.
