Just over a week until my U.S. jaunt via Heathrow. My 5D and 24-105 zoom will be in a nice safe Lowepro case as hand baggage item no. 2 (Thank you sooo much for lifting the "one item only" rule :)), but I am wondering about the CF cards I will be taking. Do they go through X ray machines OK or should I put them into the little "change and loose items" trays that are provided?

Not sure about CF cards, but I have taken SD and MS Pro Duo cards through the x-ray machines with no problems, I would therefore assume that CF ones will be fine too

CF cards are safe just like laptops and harddisks are. And no need to remove them from the bag or camera.

No problems and I take them all the time just like Tommy says. The x-rays are just bad for fast speed (over 800) film.

last month i stuck my lowepro through the x-ray thingy at the airport... and never guess what... in it was the 5d, 24-105mm and 3 loose CF cards

all worked fine, so your ones should be fine also.... how about a 5d high five?! hahaha

I'll second all the above. My CF cards have been X-rayed enough lately to glow in the dark, including twice at Heathrow. They appear to be unaffected.

So set your camera to ISO 400 or slower ;)

No problem, I fly quite a bit and have had no adverse effects on wither the camera or cf cards.

It's not film. Don't worry about it. Have a safe trip. :)
