I have been trying to calibrate my monitor today but my Eye-One Display 2 is not working properly. It keeps coming up with the message "Eye-One position detection failed". I have spent over one and a half hours trying various positions on the screen, I've cleaned the screen and also wiped off the calibration device and I have even tried reloading the software but to no avail. Can anyone suggest anything?

This is the second Eye-One that I have had problems with. This is a replacement under guarantee for one that developed a fault and would not take a contrast reading. I have e-mailed x-Rite but as yet I have had no reply. I thought Eye-One was supposed to be the best on the market but | seem to be having nothing but problems and I am wondering if it is time to ask for a refund and go for a Spyder instead as I have only been using an Eye-One since September and this is the second one that appears to be faulty.

My Eye1 Display2 shows that message perhaps once in every three times I use it. Actually the message goes on - "Do you wish to continue regardless"? or words to that effect.

Just OK it and in my experience the only difference it makes is that instead of small colour or contrast "swatches" I get full screen colours.

Any update on this? I am thinking of purchasing one of these.

Google only found this that might be remotely related: Eye One display problems (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1004&message=26764404) on XP...

Do you have the latest version of the Eye-One Match software (v3.6.2 or later)? If not, you can download it from the X-Rite site.

Are you plugging in your I1 Display 2 before starting the calibration software?

Are you plugging the Display 2 directly into a USB port on the computer (and not a hub)? Have you tried a different USB port?

I have had this happen even with the Spyder 2 once in a while. I just had the switch USB ports and it found the device.

That message does not mean it's failing to find the device "full stop". All thats happening is that when the colour swatches start flashing up, it tries to locate the position of the device on the screen so that it can use smaller swatches (and sometimes fails). I don't know why they have built that into the software, because its not required.

Honestly, unless it subsequently fails elsewhere, this is not a problem. It will still work perfectly.

Sorry I didn't find this thread sooner.

Whenever I've had this problem, it's been because the brightness setting on the monitor was too low. I know you're supposed to start with contrast 100%, brightness 0%, but on some monitors this makes the display so dull that the device literally can't see the squares it's displaying.

If you nudge the brightness up a bit (eg 50%) until the device has "found itself", then you'll be ok to continue the calibration as normal. In the next step (or the one after that, I forget) it'll tell you to take the brightness down as required.

I hope this helps.
