When I bring up the "Import" Dialog box in LR to transfer files from my camera, I have the "Display Previews" check box checked but I'm not seeing previews of the RAW files. I see empty boxes where the image previews should be. Am I missing something? I'm thinking my machine might just take a while to generate the image previews but it seems like I've waited an ample amount of time and still not seeing them.

You don't say what system you're running on but, if Windows, try the Arcsoft Raw Thumbnail Viewer. (http://www.arcsoft.com/products/rawviewer/) It will allow Windows to recognize your raw images.

It's a known issue, that there are some problems importing directly from a camera. Workarounds - use alternative software to download off the card, download without seeing previews first, or best scenario - use a card reader.

I'm running on Windows, but since Lightroom works with RAW files shouldn't it be able to preview the RAW files on my camera?

You would think so, as did I, but it probably has something to do with the fact that the image really isn't in LR yet. Try it, it should work for you.

also try the canon RAW codec for vista (if using Vista) (get it from Canon)
or the raw viewer from microsoft (which allows you to view RAW images in Windows picture viewer in Windows XP) (get it from microsoft.)

Not sure if those would solve your problem... I use a card reader myself, to download the images to a temporary folder; then on import into LR it renames and moves my images into my folder structure. Much easier than the headaches associated with importing directly from camera.
